No matter what your impression was, some form of trac bar modification is needed.
The trac bar centers the axle under the vehicle. As you push the axle further away (lifting)you need to lengthen the trac bar to adjust for the new mounting point locations. Plain and simple. If you use the original mounting points and the original trac bar its obviously going to be incorrect, translated to the axle being off center.
Will that hurt things? Yes, but not that much. Mine was off for quite awhile.
Get us a pic, your probably just needing to redrill a hole. Or, better yet, spend the $200 on an IRO double shear and ignore the wife's nagging. Buy her flowers or something.

I still just dont understand how your TB is hitting at 2". When i was doing my lift (well after i got done with the lift) it was sitting at 5" in the front, and the stock track bar was close to touching the lower mount but didnt hit at ride height.. And i ran at 3" with the stock TB for 3 years and never had a problem with it hitting the lower mount at ride height, even though the axle wasnt centered under the vehicle.
I would just get an adjustable like has been said earlier. Get it while you got the money to and you wont regret it. Just get one thats double shear with a bracket or thats upgradable to double shear in the future.

Take the dern thing off and sit your jeep on the ground. You should then be at your 3"+ of lift. Push the front end around a bit to center your axle, then hold the track bar up to the axle end mount and see where it should be located, and I'm guessing its going to be short of the original mounting location.

just remember when you go to take that track bar off that if its holding down the front end then its got quite a bit of pressure on it.. So i'd recommend you alleviate the pressure somehow before you pull it.

Slow down LOOK at everything you touched and or wrenched on and also it doesnt matter how big or little you go with a lift YOUR TRACK MOVES. 3 is usually not a big enough change to bind anything up at ride heights.sorry but you track isnt dead center if you havent corrected it. I.e with corrective track bar mounting hole. SOMEONE PLEASE CORRECT ME.but i believe its .25 up and .75 toward the inside.the factory hardware can still be used

Never heard of anything like this before. I've ran 3 cherokees with mild lifts on the stock TB with no issues. The IRO TB setup is a very worth while/money upgrade. Its going to cost about $200, but I bet it solves your issue. It also allows you to easily add more lift in the future.

Your track is probably only centered because the bar is binding and not letting the suspension provide the lift intended. Its basically holding the axle near its stock height, thus centering in the stock location.
