When I bought my 91, the brake handle was locked up (not working), and I dealt with it - until one day I ran into the house to get something, left it idling, then heard the neighbor yell -" your Jeep is rolling!!" I quickly surveyed the scene, saw that it was rolling across the street, into the city park and large trees ahead. The drivers door was wide open and I thought - yes, I can make it!. I did make it in time to stop the rear from hitting a tree - but wasn't able to keep the tree on the side from folding the door up against the front fender!! I hammered and welded back into shape (no, its not a show truck!), but ther is a valid reason to keep it intact! Russ

EDIT:Post above nails it
I have never seen or heard of one offically called an "emergency brake" always "parking brake". i.e.
The posts dealing with brake system failure are moot because the vehicle is parked with the brake engaged, and you are no where around to push on the pedal. Regardless, I have always used mine when parked, just second nature since some of my vehicles are manual others automatic.
