Best deal I could find. Will be installing on my 2000 Jeep XJ Automatic


What else do I need?


Which year Cherokees can I grab a front shaft from? Do those Cherokees have to be automatic as well? Will a stock front shaft bolt right onto the rear once I install the SYE or do I need to change anything else to make it work?

Does it matter that I have the Dana 35 rear axle?


I'm pumped to get rid of these vibrations!

 

I found a 2001 Cherokee front driveshaft for $85...


Price seems a little steep. Is that how much they go for?

 

depends on the size of lift the ds may or may not fit ? $85 for a 15 year old ds , that maybe is worn out ? time will tell.

 

Might as well as get new chain and new front output seal, and new oil pick up screen while u have everything apart.

 

It's only about a 3-3.5" lift.

Xjwonder is there any transfer case chain I should stay away from? I see a few manufacturers

Yes I did the same when I installed mine easy and cheap to do on an old TC while apart. You don't plan on keeping the D35 do you if not just use and old stock front shaft it will hold up longer than the D35. If/when you swap to an Chy 8.25 a new custom driveshaft can be bought with large joints for about $200.

 

Welp I am screwed... Apparently since I have the D35, the pinion is shorter than say an 8.25... So I can't use a stock front driveshaft off of an auto....

I can get a stock front one lengthened for about $150 which is annoying bc that's $150 more than I planned on spending....

I heard people talk about putting a front ZJ driveshaft on but idk much about this drivetrain **** and I'm starting to get aggravated now. I hate this jeep


Yes I am keeping the D35. I don't wheel or do anything crazy

 

something gotta give, if you intend to keep the D35 then paying for a lengthened drive shaft will get you fixed and on the road. Hang tuff you are doing it the right way. The aggravation will disappear along with those vibes... you'll just be broke !!

Here is a chart that lists all the drive shaft length for the xjs and zjs. You WILL need a longer one! I went with one of the longest ones available...33"... And I still only have about 2" of slip left in the driveshaft. I found one on eBay for $30 and repainted it and put new u joints in it. For a grand total of $250 for a full SYE and DriveShaft! And it has given me nothing but smiles!!!!

Buy a good set of Snap ring pliers. I found out the hard way and after trying for over an hour i bought a nice pair and took maybe 5 minutes! I have a 97 xj auto. I used a front out of the same year and have no issues. I need to buy some shims for the rear axle still but besides that it all went well.

In reference to that chart, will the 8707 driveshaft be a direct swap for me even though it's for a 242 tcase and I have a 231? I don't know if that matters or not

 

So I did some more reading and learned that the D35 will require a 1" longer driveshaft compared to an 8.25 due to the shorter pinion.

Since I'm only at 3-3.5" of lift on my D35, I'm thinking a stock front shaft off of an auto XJ should work... My setup would Measure the same as an 8.25 with 4.5" of lift. Right?

 

Looks like it should work guys... This guy had it with a shorter SYE than an AA and higher lift and still had full spline engagement. I think I am going to try the stock front shaft as I found one for $50... that is unless someone has actual real life experience that counters this thread below...

Use a cut off wheel and you can cut the cap off of the end of the driveline. shorten it if its too long or add to it. Youll have to go get the right diameter pipe to fit inside which is easy. To brace if you are adding. A chop saw will make fast work of it. Something to think about. Its just a pipe (balanced though...) with caps on each . Its good to know if you end up with the wrong size. I did mine in 30 min or less
