Default Swapping axles from an auto to a manuel?

Hey guys so i have an oppertunity to get a 86 auto 4.0 4wd xj for 300$ runs but not good so my thaughts were to just drop the whole straight axle assemblies and swap them to my 90 xj 5 spd so i can getter better gearing for 300$ in theory will this work or should i just pay the 600$ to regear with all new parts these 3.07s dont like my 33s very much lol

thanks guys

If you swap both axles it may work, but do some research here...

86 never came with the 4.0, right? Then its probably got a d30 front and d35 rear. Maybe 355s, maybe 373s?

An OK upgrade, but still a d35 for the rear. Maybe non c clip, but not that desirable.

Why not look for other axles on CL or something? In NC there has got to be a decent selection of axles for sale...

Just hit up the junk yard and find a 4cyl 5 speed with a non disco d30 and an 8.25. Plenty strong for 33's and you'll get 4.10's.

If you can get the whole jeep for $300.00 I'd do it, just for the gears alone, my 85 has 3.73's, then sell the parts jeep again and you got lower gears for free! you'd be into it just time, and have'n a good time workin on your jeep. my 2 cents
