Steering Columns from different years?
Wasn't sure if I should have posted this in OEM or Modified, but since it's about swapping years, I figured I'd give it a shot here.
I have an "89 and the only places I can find that have steering columns for a decent price have them from later models.
The closest I've found is a "96. Does anyone know if the bolt patterns are the same (or similar), and if the electronics will plug together.
This is just to see if anyone knows about this off hand, I can go and look at the columns, but like most people, just don't have a ton of time on my hands and would like to see if anyone knows if I'm about to waste a few hours on friday.

Here's a few things I learned with my build. I was piecing together the best parts using an 89 body and most electronics and driveline from a 94. I used the 94 column (in better shape) in the 89 with no issues. However, later I had the opportunity the replace the lower shaft with one from a 96 (again in better shape) and found the length was different and wouldn't work. Also 96 has drivers side air bag which you'll probably want to avoid. Keep looking for 94 or older.

You have what is basically a GM-style column, which there are plenty of. Most late-70 to early 90's should work. Components will differ. If you use 91-up XJ/MJ stuff the ign. lock-cyl will be different. Up to 94- is probably your best bet, as Chryco added airbags at 95

Hey guys,
I know I am resurrecting an old thread. (but not THAT old! lol) Here is my question. I am swapping the doors and gate off my 96 onto my 90. Rather than swapping lock cylinders, I want to swap the column. (1 key for all.)
To do this, if I am reading right, I have to delete the airbag (already planned on it), and swap the lower shaft due to length. Are these the only issues?
Thanks!
