Default Speedometer problems after engine and transmission swap

Hey guys,

About a year ago I bought a 92 xj out of a yard (no wheels and tires, moldy interior etc.) That had a frozen motor. A few months before that I had bought a 94 xj fire department rig that had been rolled over in a mud puddle with 100k on the motor and tranny. Decided to swap out motor and trans (which is a whole other story).

I discovered that the speedo gear from the 92 had been ripped out, so I had no donor. The 94 trans and 92 have different wire counts in each end. I tried splicing the wires from the 94 and 92 speedos to no avail. I've been driving 3000 miles without a speedometer and have no clue how to proceed. The 94 body and parts were all sold.

Has anyone created a work around for this or have any ideas? At this point I'd be willing to use an aftermarket speedometer with a standalone wheel sensor. Thanks guys

The 92 wiring the comes out of the firewall into the engine bay has a similar plug to the 94 male end that comes off of the transmission. One has 3 wires in the loom, the other has 2.

Just to clarify, the 92 has a electronic speedometeras did my 94. They switched over from cable-driven speedometers a few years before that I believe.
