speedo adapter?
Hello
I just bought my first cherokee today! Its a 1988 with a 1996 engine. There are a few thing that do not work. The first one I want to address is...the man I bought it from said that the speedometer did not work because when they swapped the engines they just "forgot" to hook it up. I just got it home and had a look where it should hook up and found that the 1988 "screw on" speedo cable does not fit to the 1996 speedo electronic type sensor on the transfer case. Can anyone tell me if there is an adapter to get my cable to fit? Thanks so much!

I think I may have found what I'm looking for. After a long and uneventful search of every auto part store (online and offline) and every junkyard in my area. I found a speedo adapter that just might work! I found it on the advance auto parts website (even though they said they don't sell it when I asked at the store).
They call it a Auto7 drive unit. Here is the link...
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Drive-Unit-Auto7_10128596-P_2269_R|GRPTRANAMS____#
I also found where you can buy others from...
http://www.factorychryslerparts.com
but the site was kind of confusing and much more expensive.
I hope this works...

Odds are good it will come nowhere near working. Too short/narrow to go in the t-case as is and the gear on it will do no good. Then you have to track down different tooth counts to get the speedo close.
There is one guy building a conversion to work off the electronic speed signal and run a mech speedo. I'm going this route, it'll save money in the long run and be accurate.

I was going to order it from advance auto parts tomorrow but the more I get to looking at it the more I start to doubt it as well. I was hoping I could reuse the gear in the adapter I have now but I know very little about this stuff and more than likely it won't work. It sounds like you have done a lot more research on the subject than I.
The conversion to work off the electronic speed signal sounds a little complex and expensive for me but it is still a possibility.
With all the engineering and money that has gone into this type of conversion it almost seems like you could have an adapter machined or customized.
Do you think there is a mechanical speedo adapter out there that will bolt directly to my transfer case? The ones in the pictures I posted earlier in this thread seem like a closer fit. I just can't seem to find any junk yards that have them in my area.

I've researched this for weeks and came up blank. I seen the pic of the mech adapter a few posts up and looked some more now that I knew what it looked like but still came up blank. I already picked up everything I'll need to run a electronic speedo at the t-case and I'll run the wiring but will have to wait on the speedo and use my GPS for the time being until the conversion is finalized. It was my intention of running a aftermarket electronic speedo but when the conversion came up, the cost difference was minimal so I decided to stick it out and wait for it. Less cluttered dash too.
I thought about trying to keep the mech speedo but getting it to read right would most likely cost a small fortune in different gears so some form of electronic will be it.

even better......http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...FVTDtgods2aObw
Tire height = 28 1/4"
rear eand ratio (Look for a tag under one of the diff cover bolts in the 9 o'clock position) =3.55
drive gear = usually a 13 on all dodge and jeep
I took some photos of my electronic drive gear just to be more helpful.
He was able to ship the housing, o-ring, and gear today and the price came to $65.40
I feel like this is going to work. I will update when it gets here.
