Anyone notice any decrease in gas mileage from throwing a full size spare up on your roof rack? I heard people say they removed the fire because it's just more weight that's killing gas but what do you guys think?

With my spare on my roof I get 13mpg. With it off, I get 15 mpg. Was worse but I did some maintenance and now I'm pulling 15 without my spare. So I notice about a 2 mpg difference. Adds up in the long run
Have not added the spare on my roof ck yet but I would say that it does effect fuel economy because I lost almost 2 miles a gallon just from putting a ladder rack on my pick up truck. It was a lite weight aluminum one to so weight wasnt the issue. It has to have been because it killed the aerodynamics. This theory is supported by the fact that I noticed no difference when driving slow around town. Only saw it decrease at highway speeds.

putting a tire on the roof will DEFINITELY have a negative impact on fuel mileage. toss in the cargo area and compare for yourself.
but its a Jeep. May not make the best commuter vehicle

Happiest day of this jeeps life was getting the tire swing out for my rear bumper. Hated the tire up there. Gas milage was 12.9 with it up there. Now i'm getting 14.3 --- cross winds suxed as well with it up there
