Shifting T/C after front axle conversion
 
I have an early 91 XJ (mfg 8/90) with Renix 4.0 and NP242 T/C. I am right near the end of converting to a non-CAD front axle that I am transplanting from a 94. The CAD vacuum lines at the axle are now disconnected. My question is, when I go to drive it and shift into any of the 4WD modes, without vacuum in play, how will the T/C be affected? Will it just shift into the different modes that I want or is there something else I need to do for it to work properly? I know this is a very common conversion but can't find much info pertaining to using the T/C after the axle conversion and removal of the vacuum setup.

If it is affected at all, very minor. The non CAD design is used on all the later XJ, ZJ and WJ models

You can shift in between 2hi and 4hi at any speed. To go in and out of 4x4 low you have to be in neutral and moving very slow or stopped.

OK - thanks guys. I just wanted to be sure the transfer case would work properly now that there is no vacuum signal.

The transfer case only provides the signal path for the vacuum to the disconnect via a switch and has no affect on the case it self. You will need to locate and cap the vacuum source to the switch at the vacuum ball otherwise you will have a lean vacuum leak.

Thanks Domaas - so if I cap off the 3 hard vacuum lines down in the lower right rear of the engine compartment/trans tunnel area, would that take care of the vacuum leak situation? Or do you mean something different?

follow the hard lines to where they connect to the vacuum ball (should be behind bumper i think) and cap it at the ball connection. There should only be 1 line to cap, the rest don't worry about. I don't have any pictures since it has been several years since I deleted my CAD axle. Once you cap the vac source the rest of the check valves and atmospheric vents become obsolete

Found this for you......

cap it at #6 red line (#1 is the vac tank/ball) where it comes out of the vac ball. don't worry about capping the line, just cap the ball where the line goes in..

If I cap the ball port but leave the red vacuum line disconnected, won't that affect the vacuum control switch somehow with the open line?

This all gets done AFTER the axle swap. Once you swap out the axle that whole vac circuit is removed and no longer needed, so when you pull the line and cap it you have no leak. The open lines can be removed after the axle swap or left in place and left open with no affect.
