Ok, I've been doing some research and looking at jeep, and I've decided against OD green flat. I now want to go gloss black, that looks real good on a cherokee. What do you think is the best for metal? Rustoleum or krylon? And just to get an idea, ,how many cans would it take to do one coat?

Just FYI.
I can almost guarntee that gloss black will look like dog **** coming from a spray can to paint a whole car.

Ive done an entire jeep in krylon italian olive..I was very pleased with the results..but it was a LONNNGG process.

Gloss black will show EVERY **** up you make.. and you will make them. It may look good from 100 yards away, but will look like poo up close.

Montana spraypaint if you can get ur hands on some, with a nice fat cap and some steady hands and I'm sure it would look decent. But like previously said, If you mess up, you will see it.

I used to swear by rustoleum paint, but now I'm not so sure. Last few projects I've done the paint has flaked/chipped realllllly easy. Pretty much wasted my time/money with it. Maybe I got a bad batch.

Buy a spray gun. Wont cost a massive amount more than the 30 cans of spray paint you'll use. Plus it'll look a hell of a lot better if you prep it right.

I wouldnt ever rattle can an entire vehicle in anything other than a flat color.

Gloss will just show up too much stuff.

Don't rattle can any gloss color. It is a ton of work and almost impossible to get a even coat over the whole thing. If at all possible use a air compressor. Much easier way to go.

1. Pick up a harbor freight paint sprayer
2. Go to home depot and pick up quarts of the color of your choice (Rustoleum high gloss black paint)
3. 3 quarts should be about enough for an XJ
3. Mix 50% paint and 50% mineral spirits in your sprayer
4. Have all your prep work done obviously
5. Spray the car with a thin layer then wait about an hour and repeat.
6. Do about 3 or 4 layers, wait for it to dry and sand any drips or anything you have
7. Do anywhere from 4 to 8 layers total and then do some final sanding if you want.
8. Wait 24 hours for everything to fully cure then enjoy your jeep.

Total cost for everything should be around $75 or so. Extremely affordable and it will actually look really good if you take your time and try not to get any runs. If for whatever reason you can spray it or don't have a compressor, use a foam roller from home depot as well. You have to be a little more careful this way but the same results can be had. I'd agree, at 20' looks awesome. Just did the entire front clip with rust-oleum professional gloss black. And for a trail rig that lives in the trees, I'm not too worried about the finish as much as just being one color.
For the comanche, I used summit's paint shop, for the price looks awesome. Don't have a photo of that though.

I did my whole jeep with krylon navy blue gloss paint, took me 7 cans to do it all with 3-4 coats. It was already flat black.
