Default Removing Locker?

I have a 1998 XJ 4.0 I6. When I bought it, it came with a Detroit Locker in the Rear. It's a Dana 44 with 4.11 gears. I want to take the locker out because I use it as a daily driver more than I take it off-road. What do I need to go back to an open differential.

all you should need are the small spider gears. essentially just look up how to install a locker and go backwards from that.

Your wrong a Detroit is a full case locker he will need a install kit carrier and spiders with all the thrust washers. Plus labor to basically regear the axle

Imo OP should leave it as it is. Mine has had a rear locker for 3 years and my wife uses it as a dd with zero issues.

I got new tires at 90,000 Miles. I'm now at 100,500 and my front tires are basically brand new and my rear tires have maybe 5% tread left. That is why I want to take it out. They are Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs.

LOL WHAT?

The locker is not the issue causing that. Something else is majorly wrong there.

That's impossible. My XJ has been locked in the rear for 3 years with the same set of tires. All 4 of my tires are at 50% tread life after 20k miles. I have had 5 jeeps all locked in the rear or both front and rear for the last 15 years. I have never had tires wear uneven or that fast cause a rear locker. I suggest you stop power braking !

I have Detroit Lockers front and rear and no rear tire wear like that, you have other problems.

I have ran lockers in my hot rods on the street for a lot of years without issues either.

Ever heard of rotating tires?

It doesn't make sense to take the locker out. Just pull the axle and sell it for cash to get a new axle.

I normally do rotate my tires... Around this time i normally would. But what's the point if two tires at shot. My locker never unlocks when I got around turns, But i've read that that's normal with the Detroit locker. Tomorrow when it is light out I will post pictures.
