So have you done any of these modifications yet?

The AC compressor, when not engaged, has the same amount of drag as the bypass pulley. So there will be NO gain.

Do you have a link to an electric water pump for our XJ?

I'll ignore the cheap shots your trying to take.

But i'll be waiting for proof of these amazing gains.

Please reread my intial post and show us where I said to use a bypass pully and where I said they would be AMAZING gains.
Please do not put words in my mouth.
Your reading comprehension skills are sorely lacking.

There are no specific electric water pumps. There is however a kit to turn the pump with an eletric motor.

Also a bored throttle body (NOT a spacer), upgraded injectors and an open cone filter will make a huge difference. I noticed a big difference just with an open cone filter, something many on this site said wouldnt do much if anything. It OBVIOUSLY increased throttle response, gained power, quieted my motor and improved my gas mileage quite a bit. Lots of stuff to do that WILL make a difference. A tuner, chip, programmer, etc., wont.

Thanks buddy I think I give it a tune up today. But why should I not use a spacer ?

The spacer only gives an advantage if it uses the fuel injector in the throttle body.
Ours have intake injection. Meaning it shoots gas almost at the intake valve.

How about removing the mechanical cooling fan and installing an electric one? Rotating that 10-15 lbs has got to add up to something. You used to be able to get un powered steering boxes too at one time. That pump is another drag on the engine. Don't use the A/C? Then get rid of it entirely without using an idler pull if you can. Drag racers now use an electric water pump instead of another pulley. About the only thing that cannot be removed from the engine is the alternator.
And don' forget on checking your tire pressure WEEKLY. It's incredible how much more drag is imposed on a vehicle when even 1 tire is 5 lbs down.

That'll give marginal gains at best.

Yeah your right. It's an XJ . What was I thinking?

So don't bother doing anything. Just keep paying through the nose. After all It's an XJ and you knew it was a pig on gas when you bought it.
Any attempt to get better gas mileage will only result in ridicule from your peers.:wallbash:

Again, all the things you suggested would provide gains that are MARGINAL AT BEST. In other words, NOT WORTH THE TIME, MONEY, OR EFFORT.

I already pointed this out, and received nothing but sarcasm from you in return.

How about you put down some fact? Show where my statement is false, please.

Because we arent running carbs and our air is coming in before the injector, putting on a spacer does absolutely nothing. You can put the throttle body 10 feet away, it wont change the way the fuel and air are delivered. Now boring the throttle body itself allows more air in quicker, so that will make a difference. However, you make 4 or 5 changes of 1-3 horses and adding a few more mpg, that adds up pretty good. A tune up, bored throttle body, bigger injectors, open cone filter and correct tire pressure could all add up to 5-15 horses and 5+ mpg if not more depending on your driving style (heavy or light foot). A TRUE cold air intake is said to add 5-15 horses alone.

By the time you spend all this money on making mpgs you have paid half of a geo metro xfi... The other half youll make back in a few months of gas prices... Why argue of what works and what doesnt... much less even ask how to get mpg's from a xj (again)... Wasting bandwidth... lol

Agreed and said much better

mpg

Gear ratio changes can help. Cold air intake is good. Until you hit a big puddle at 35+ mph. I'm speaking from experience. I was lucky and the water ONLY stalled my jeep. Then I had to spend 15-20 min cleaning crap outta my filter, intake pipe and throttle body. If you want good gas mileage run skinny tires, the right size gears, a tuned engine and have a light foot. I bet you could get 30mpg's.

cdawall 10-27-2011 06:11 PM

Good tune up, proper gears and a light foot can easily get 20mpg+ none of the mods you have listed are worth the effort. I have an xj with no ac and one with it. That means one has an ac and the other has the bypass there is no difference in mpg.

Is there a reason why there are several on this site that want to squash any idea that there may be some ways we can get better gas milage.
I don`t understand why some hate this idea so much.
If you save $10 a fill up you can then afford at the end of the year that long arm kit you`ve been wanting.

BTW here are 2 articles I was able to quickly find that show inceases in gas milage by going to electric fans.

What about the electric water pump, now?

digger21 10-27-2011 06:24 PM

The electric fan mod is true cause of the large amount of drag due to the clutch fan. I'm not sure any other pulley is causing as much and therefor a small change if deleted. I do like the electric water pump idea , and frankly anything else that isn't "stock". I like new things in xj's, I'm a sucker for going against the grain.

bigvig 10-27-2011 06:34 PM

I cant believe there are people saying that keeping your Jeep tuned ($15 bucks a year?), putting on an open cone filter ($40 or less one time), bigger injectors ($50 one time), keeping new fluids in it ($125 a year for me), keeping your tires inflated correctly (free), bored throttle body ($70 one time) are worth it. Thats $300 bucks initially and about $150 a year on routine maintenance...and it isnt worth it? You guys must be driving ****piles, offroad only, 100 miles a year if you think those arent worth it. Mines a daily driver and all those mods are GREAT mods to make my motor HAPPY and adds a little better MPG each, let alone horse power, better handling and giving my engine a longer life. I put about 900 miles a month on my Jeep and those "unnecessary" mods will pay for themselves FAST and save me money from there on out. Its a no-brainer.

Gee oh Dee 10-27-2011 06:49 PM

I agree regular maint is worth it.

However, bypassing the AC compressor won't do much. And good luck with a reasonable, reliable electric water pump.

I never once said that the clutch fan wasn't somthing to address. I will say that its a good thing to remove if you can, but not something everyone can just go out and do. And the gain at 3% isn't phenominal.

Although the Taurus fan will find its way into my 87. More for the cooling benefit. :D
