I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport with an NP231 transfer case.
My transfer case needed a rebuild after the chain ate a hole through the bottom and dumped all the fluid out. I was thinking that while I had the transfer case out and easily accessible, I would install a slip yoke eliminator kit. From what I understand, you can use a front drive shaft to replace the slip-yoke style rear one. Is there a way to tell if a duplicate of my current front drive shaft would suffice? Are there recommended collapsed/expanded lengths I should have? I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to this sort of thing.

which tranny do you have? There is alot of good info here on CF about this as well already.
I am actually not sure which tranny it is. Think it's an AX15 which is the 4-speed automatic. Not positive though. And I've looked through some of the forums a bit. Is there any really good guides here you can recommend?

Ax 15 is stick shift no automatic ,shaft length depends on amount of lift you have.Originally Posted by savagess2546

You pretty much gotta install sye then measure for length of shaft ,or you can ask around here and find some one with same lift and use there measurement for reference...this list shows factory shaft lengths you can swap in.http://www.myjeepxj.com/useful-infor...aft-infomation

I called tom woods and gave him year and size lift and he made my driveshaft and sent it along with the sye kit. No measuring involved. Runs great!

I think it was less than 400 for the sye kit and the driveshaft. Maybe 350 ish.. the sye was an easy install as well, justdont use the instructions. Haha.. I used a write up thread on here and one you tube video, just had the laptop next to me and got it done in about 4 hours.. ( I have NEVER seen or messed with the internals before either. Its pretty hard to screw up. If you go that route hit me up for the linksOriginally Posted by freegdr

I think I have a 2" lift. I bought the Jeep with the lift already on it.
My front drive shaft collapsed is the same length as my rear drive shaft. With an SYE kit installed, would the front drive shaft have enough travel? If installed in the rear?

By rights yes.. I have heard a lot of guys doing that.. mt only reccomendation would be if you go any higher get one built right for your measurements.Originally Posted by savagess2546

So I've been looking on several forums and even talked to a Jeep guy and I was wondering about angling the rear drive shaft. Hard to believe that's necessary on only a 2" lift but I'm not positive.
And I'm going to just get another front drive shaft to use on the back and once I lift it further, I'll have a custom one built for sure.

Transfer case is DONE. I only used a few things out of the rebuild kit which was a bummer. Came with four or five bearings, roughly 10 oil seals, around 6 fork pads, and a metal sleeve. Since I replaced the rear half, it already had a bearing in it. And I installed an SYE which rendered some more stuff useless. Oh well. Anyways.
Snap rings are a PITA. Seriously. Especially when they don't have holes for snap ring pliers.

This one was hell getting off and hell putting back on.

End result. I'm satisfied.
