Oil issues
 
I just put a 4.0 into my xj the motor is from a 96 that had been sitting for over 6 months but had been a good motor before. I replaced all the gaskets and oil pump and all that. I finally got it put in and running but the oil is not reaching the top of the motor. I know the pump is good cause I took it back and and tested it and still nothing. I don't know where to even look. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

What kind of oil filter are you running? What is your oil pressure reading?

I've swapped the oil filter 2 times. And j know the oil is making it to the filter just not anywhere else. It's not reading any oil pressure at all

When you replaced the oil pump how did you install the pickup tube into the new pump?

Did you check the oil filter adapter? Maybe with it sitting for 6 months, some sludge could have built up and is blocking oil flow.

I pressed it in. The oil for what I can tell is getting through the or atleast in the filter and just stopping

And the adapter is new

There is a possibility that the tube is sucking air where it is pressed into the pump.

I hope you primed the pump, yes? they won't pump air.. also, if you remove the dist, you can spin the pump without cranking the motor. did you use a gasket between the pump and the engine? and lastly, you DID top off the crankcase with oil, right? good luck finding the issue!

X2 i was just about to say all that, except for the topping the crankcase with oil part, i wouldnt insult your intelligence like that lol.

I primed the pump and used a gasket. And yes there is oil. I even started it without a filter to make sure oil was even moving and it sprayed out but it's not going up through the block

How exactly did you test to see if oil was goin through the block?

I made sure the oil pump worked by testing it with a drill in a bucket of oil. And I took the sending unit out and cranked it and oil sprayed out but it's just not getting to the top of the block

Now that it is in the engine, take the distributor off, take the oil filler cap off, crank it with a drill and a long large screwdriver with the handle taken off, and have a friend with a flashlight look into the valve cover to see if oil is getting up in there. If the pump is working, and you have oil, and the oil filter adaptor is new, then there should be no reason (that i can think of) that is keeping oil from flowing. I have heard people say that it can take up to like a minute for oil to get to the top, so be patient.

Well see the block I started with was a good motor but the owner used very cheap oil and it had a whole lot of sludge in it. So I'm thinking it might be stopped up somewhere but i don't know
