Default NP231 to NP242 swap?

Wanting to do a transfer case swap on my 98 XJ, switching from a NP231J to a NP242. Can anyone tell me what parts I will need to do the swap so that I can do it correctly the first time with no issues.

Its a direct swap. I just swapped mine from a 242 to a 231 and all I needed was the case and linkage. Just make sure its the same spline count

Thanks!

Probably a stupid question but the 242 has to be from a 97-01 for my 98 XJ, right?

That Im not sure of. I think as long as the spline count is the same and it has the same output shaft, it'll work. Im not positive so Im not guaranteeing it or anything.

I have been toying with the idea of doing this to my '00. Hoping to come across a parts Jeep with a 242 and a 8.25 3.55 with a factory limited slip rear. Figure it would be be suitable for why I own a Jeep these days. Just to get around when it snows. So poking around from time to time on how to do this makes me think it is a little more them just the transfer case and the linkage. You will need the bezel with the shift gate from the 242 donor. Also is seems you need a short piece of wiring harness so that your full time 4 wheel drive light will light up on the dash when you are in that mode. You do have that in the dash and it appears that a bulb should already be in there. I have pieced this together from various threads and websites. No idea how accurate anything I wrote is though. People have done this but I have not really found a detailed thread with all the info in one place yet. Like I said toy with the idea and poke around about it from time to time.

Yes I am sorry. You do need the shiftier and bezel. Im not sure as how to go about making the light on the dash work. Mine stopped working with my swap, but I know what gear Im in, so it doesn't bother me
