Okay guys, Confirm something for me. My 99XJ has AC. I am going to take it off. Then what belt will I need? I am thinking it is this one but I need someone to confirm it.
Is it 71" long? I know it says for a earlier model but it would still work right?
Its really easy to figure out. Take your old belt cut it and then wrap it around the belts till you meet without the AC pump. Make a note of the total length then go to the part store and grab one that size. Most belts have the lengths on the boxes or in there computers.
Hmm I thought of that but then thought what If I cant find exactly what I need I will just try that once I go to do this. I dont use the AC pump and dont need it so I want it out of the way. Later on sometime I want to switch to electric fans all the way also. Could I just add another electric fan on there like the stock on it already has? I have an extra one laying around.
You have to have a pully where your AC compressor is, or your other pullys won't turn the correct way. Jeeps that came without ac simply had a pully that bolted where your compressor is, and the belt is the same length. You can find them at the jy or parts store. Do a search, there have been quite a few threads on this topic.
Don't worry about the belt length, untill you solve the pully issue. the pully placement and size will determine the belt size. After you install a idler pully or OBA Compressor. Measure for the new belt size, It will NOT be a stock XJ size AC or no AC.
Okay this is what I am looking at. I want to completely remove the compressor and all the plumbing that goes with it. So what AC bypass pulley will I need to bolt back in place? I have a 99 XJ. Most all the AC bypass pulleys are listed for 93-98 Grands. What will I need to do to get rid of all the AC crap?
I think he is wrong. You can install a shorter belt with no troubles. Here is why. I looked under the hood of my 98 cherokee and there is a diagram to show the routing of the belt. On the label it shows both routing patterns. With Or without A.C. if it was not acceptable to use a shorter belt, that would not appear as an option.

Well, you're almost 12 years late to the discussion.
The 2.5 engines can use a shorter belt. The 4.0 need the bypass pulley. That's why they make them.
This is why you need to keep the idler pulley in place of the A/C one. If you just took out the compressor and ran a shorter belt, it would hit the fan pulley.
Except for the fact the drive belt fan will spin in the incorrect direction & thus not properly cool your jeep. This will work if you run e-fans only. Otherwise no bueno.
