just bought a 84 4 door, 2.8 V6 small lift with 31's


what is this pump ??? below alternator that has a hose going to the air cleaner?


few little problems now, ( hits ) hard when you put into reverse ( wish it was a standard ) U joints appear to be in good shape, may be due to engine idles a bit high


has a carb that has VERSAJET on it....and good or need a upgrade ?


motor to small ( I have heard of the 3.4 upgrade but prefer to go diesel )


rear axle has a popping noise when turning.......can I do a 8.8 upgrade like my YJ ???
best idea for bigger alternator ?

AC actually works ( on high ) which is great news here in southeast Texas


all in all, very little rust, not a bad starting point at all for a good build.

 

It's probably the air pump for smog purposes. Any engine you swap in is an upgrade over the weak and leaky 2.8 v6.

 

Yeah you can do the explorer 8.8 swap on the xj.If i was going to motor swap i would go v8 lt1 or ls1 gm trans and maybe a better t case depending your budget.

 

You swap in a lot of stuff if you've got the skill or friends. Seems like the easiest swap would be a later generation 4.0, available and similar mounts. But if pockets are deep...go crazy. Check out cruiser54 for his top 25 renix jeep tips. Applies to you with the 84.
