Hi Guys, first post in the "modified tech" section as I just lifted my XJ. Unfortunately, my rear end is clunking over just about every other bump and dip in the road. Any idea's? Specs in my signature.

Rear sway bars been removed, and the shocks are tight.
I'll check that all the bolts are still tight. Anything is possible but I've only put like 20 miles on it.

Suspect e-brake cable pulling on drums. Also stock rear brake line is too short for 3.5" lift.
First, crawl under and have a look, then lift chassis and allow axle to fully droop. Check for clearance.
Also, Shackle bolt should be loose enough to allow movement.

did you do a t-case drop or SYE. Could have the rear drive shaft making noise at the slip yoke. My 98 only had a 3" lift and there was only 3/4 of an inch of drive shaft in the tcase which resulted in terrible noises.

I know I'll need extended brake lines, but I'm not flexing it for the time being, so although they are short, that shouldn't be an issue. On the list of things to do though.
What is the torque spec on the bolts? My Haynes, which I don't like, but use for reference, says 109 ft/lbs for the front and rear leaf spring bolts, but doesn't indicate if that's the upper or lower shackle bolt. I feel like that's too much for at least the lower shackle bolt.
Also, my shackle angle is pretty good. I wouldn't say it's perfect but it's not vertical. So its definitely clunky, and not a rough ride.
Lastly, a tcase drop is in the future, as it's unfortunately going to be a while before I can get into my local off-road shop to have them install an SYE.

Have a friend or two bounce the rear of the jeep up and down see if you can hear the clunk doing that.Or have a friend drive the jeep over a speed bump or two with you in the back seat to see if you can hear about where the sound is coming from.
