Hey all!

I'm now the proud owner of a 93 Cherokee Sport 4.0L with 5spd! Hopefully I did ok for my first project.

The body looked pretty good but mechanically she needs a lot of love. It's running with about 280K miles (...) but has signs of leaks. Also has the death wobble, speedo is busted, parking brake is bad, few wires hanging with obvious signs of tampering.... you get the idea.


Would you all mind giving a new guy advice?

 

Did you get a good deal? Sounds like quite a few problems. Rust man how's the rust? Underneath the jeep and especially the floor pans. Before anything check to make sure rust won't be a major problem

 

I paid $800, although that was probably a little high. Dang things go for way to much in my area and are always so far away. It didn't look like there was any rust but there are a few areas I'm unsure of. I plan on taking some pics today to get some feedback on if it's worth the time/money.

 

Alot of people may disagree, but I would have a hard time putting money into something with that much miles. Yeah they CAN last a long time but I don't trust other people's service habits. Of course there are countless parts jeeps with good motors, transmissions, etc but by the time you spend money and effort swapping that, you could have spent the money on a better base for your project. But heck for $800, drive it until it breaks. But my opinion is if you do want to keep it, spend your money getting it running great before you even think of lifts or other things

 

So it wouldn't be worth rebuilding/replacing the engine and then replacing suspension and drive components? I was thinking it'd probably cost about $8,000 to get her road worthy with an engine swap, suspension, brakes, and hoses and other misc small things. Bad idea?

 

Uhhh yeah terrible idea. There are plenty of nice jeeps out there. Of course all need something but very minor. What your saying you need to be done to it is absurd. Save your time and money and buy something in better shape

Let's see some pics of the machine before we rush to judgement on the quality of the deal.

So far it sounds like pretty minor issues.

 

Oh for sure. He asked what he should do, I said check for rust, I stated an opinion I had about a vehicle with almost 300k and before I new it we were all of a sudden talking about 8k in expenses! If it's in decent shape sure put 600 bucks or so. Anymore than that I don't know about the deal

Looks to be in good shape so 800 bucks wasn't bad. Don't freak me out saying it needed 8k haha. So did you have plans for lifting? I would leave it as is and fix it up and daily it

 

I agree with Martlor.

Fix your leaks and other various gremlins to get it in top form and then decide if you want to go wild with it.

These are fairly cheap and simple vehicles to work on, you just have to be willing to invest your time.
