Question New gear/locker break-in question.

I searched but couldn't find anything relevant.

I will soon be re-gearing my Cherokee and installing front and rear Lokka lockers. Would it be best to break in the gears first, then install the lockers or just install everything at the same time?

I just thought the rear locker, mainly, would be kind of hard on the gears during break-in?

I had my front locker in during gear break in, no problems.

When I swapped my geared rear end over I was facing the same dilemma. I opted to run the rear open and throw in the locker when I did the 500 mile fluid change. I still haven't installed it... Lol

That's kind of what I was thinking. I'd really just like to do all the setup all at 1 time though. dammit

Nothing in the set up has to change. Just throw the lunchbox in.

Any of you guys ever buy a brand new car?
Did you "break-in" the gears on it?
Do you think the original owner of your XJ/ZJ/WJ did a proper "Break-in"? How many miles on those original gears now?

Are you saying the gear break in recommended by manufacturers is useless or that all of our R&P's are waiting to fail any minute now?

I've bought my fair share of new cars...never did any sort of gear break-in procedure. I jumped in a drove 'em....just like darn near everyone else that ever bought a new car.

When I install gears I tell my customers to drive it like they would anything else....and I've yet to have any come back for failure due to a lack of following some sort of mythical break-in procedure.

Drive it for a few hundred and change your oil, then follow a normal maintenance schedule (cuz we all do...right? ).

YMMV

He does make a valid point. Never have though about that till now. Thinking about it we have a 01 ram got it with 20 miles and never changed the diff fluid after some many miles. I taught to drive X miles and Y speed for Z time, change then again at X miles again at Y speed.

I've thought the same thing about stock axles.

Can't hurt to "Break them in". I've always thought it was about the metal releasing some chemical as it heated up for the first time in application in the pattern. Who knows. Never had a problem with mine either.

Agreed, there's no harm in following the manufacturers recommendations. My opinion is simply that it won't help either.

Not following a break-in procedure can void a warranty! It's just impossible to prove you didn't follow procedure.

according to the warranty on my richmonds, it is possible to prove improper break in through oil analysis and metalurgical testing.
