1989 Cherokee 5 speed Peugeot tranny,NP 231, slip yoke eliminator....... On way home from work, heard a pretty good POP while in 2WD then lost all forward momentum. Got to a side street and was able to get truck into 4 low and go thru all gears and back to work/tools.guessed it was linkage issue but couldn't correct so had it towed home. I manually am able 2 still get it into 4 low & go thru all gears but when where it should be 4hi & 2hi I just get basically neutral with a very slight grinding.....no forward motion possible. I did install a Boostwerks TC shift linkage kit awhile back( NOT blaming, just stating mod and info).....I'm looking thru my shop manual & it's not helping......any ideas out there??? SYE is NOT a hack/tap but can't remember brand.....thanks for ANY light you guys can shed here....only truck & I GOTTA b at work Monday....

You probably broke the shift fork or shift synchrnizer inside the t-case seeing as you have gears in 4WD but not 2WD.

Jack all four wheels up and put jackstands under the axles. Get in and have someone watch the front and rear wheels as you put it in gear. If the rear does turn, then it's not your SYE or rear output.

Default Need help fast......update....

Transfer case all over garage floor.found minor problem in oil pump seal fragmenting.....Range fork has 2 decent size pieces missing.....& shift hub teeth SEEM ground down quite a bit. My question about shift hub teeth is are they tapered front to back at all or should they pretty much be straight and flat across teeth? Most likely will get 1 since I have it apart but asking because where it meshes with front gears is tapered also.....and I'm wondering if IT needs replacement as well. I believe it comes as unit and pressed in?( More $$$$$)! Thanks for any help and for help already given...

The "shift collar" should have a slight taper across each end of the teeth for smooth engagement.

Default Thanks Outlaw!

Now for the innermost front gear that meshes w/shift collar....is it pressed in ! I removed the large snap ring but it didn't budge. IF I replace that also is it replaced as a unit or does it break down ? I'm hoping to order parts tomorrow and get it all back together this wknd....once again, thanks for the help!!

Default Jeep Dealer ONLY parts?

Are the range Fork and Shift Hub dealer only parts?? Tried NAPA(who r usually AWESOME finding parts) & the ONLY NP231 part carried was rebuild gasket kit.ran outta time to go elsewhere...... Also any upgrades to the transfer case I should look into? Don't need 4:1 conversion, have Advanced Adapters SYE installed..... Mostly looking at internals upgrades/strengthening..... Thanks 4 any responses....Pez

The range fork is $42.95 on Amazon and the hub is a little less than $100. You could upgrade the chain while you're in there
