Measuring lift height(non fender)

So I know with a xj with stock fender flares you can measure from the bottom of them to see how high you have gone, mine are gone..., lol I remember seeing another method but can't remember the exact details, I know it involved the top of the axle to to....oil pan or frame rail. Just trying to remember how it's done.

from the top of the axle tube (tube and not linkage) to the bottom of the "frame rail" the rail and again no linkage
front stock is 6.75"
rear stock is 6"
anything more is lift
front stock is 6.75"
rear stock is 6"
anything more is lift
