Default Measuring driveshaft length and finding the right shaft?!

Alright all, just installed my AA SYE. I'm planning on finding a JY DS to slap on the rear, but I'm baffled by the measurements...

The distance from yoke to yoke in the rear is 33-34"

I have 3.5 RE leafs in the back, netting around 4-4.5"

NP231, AW4, C8.25

I thought that measurement appeared too long... I don't think I will be able to use an XJ front DS with that?!

Perhaps a ZJ front DS? Do they use the same 1310 yoke?

Thanks guys

This is the same chart I used when I found my shaft. There are some longer options out there, just got to do a little hunting at the junk yards.

Good luck with your search.

Line A is the measurement you wasn't.....If that's 33 you want a 31 something shaft.

I'm confused then...I went yoke to yoke (like figure A). I promise I'm not this stupid. Going to give it another shot after dinner and a beer or three...lol

This is a formatted version of the "chart" in the NAXJA link. (No idea what freegdr posted... broken link)

This chart is the collapsed lengths of stock front drive shafts. You should have +/- 1.5" in most situations. This is how our stock shafts are measured. So take your measurement between yokes, subtract 1.5", and go find a DS that matches the list below.

Code:
Length Model Years Engine Transmission Part Number

33.500" ZJ 96-98 4.0L 42RE w/NP249 52099260

32.875" ZJ 96 5.2L 44RE w/NP249 52098501
32.870" ZJ 93-95 5.2L 46RH 53008427 *w/o CV

25.310" XJ 89-01 2.5L AX-5 53005541

The A500 was later renamed the 44RE. w/o CV means there is a single-cardan joint at both ends.

Bought a couple DS's today at the JY for 100 bucks! One is an XJ front and the other is a little longer, a ZJ shaft. According to the chart above it is not a double-cardan but it really is... part number 52098790. I can send pics to verify...

As requested! And yes, I know the splines are showing... I have a couple remedies in store for that. They will still show a little bit but the splines on the shaft I found were pretty long... There is at least 3" engagement in the picture shown.

Cool! That looks similar to the ZJ shaft I picked up, either a 52098707 or 52099260 (no label). Same mysterious blue grease in the splines.

What happened to the rubber boot?
