Default Max tire size on Ford 9"?

I'm debating on what axle to run in my rear as i'm preparing to go full widths. choosing between a 9" or a dana 60. I plan on running 38's, would a 9" hold up to this well enough? or should i go 60 route...

If you are going that far with it, stick D60 under it....

a 9" will hold up to a 38 just fine. and you get more clearance with a 9"

Okay. And the reason i mainly ask is there are a lot of already built 9" for cheap locally. so it'd be much cheaper to pick one up then build a d60.

most people refer to the ford 9"

but the above statement is true.

what I mean by my first statement to clarify is that toyota makes a "9 inch" variation as well as GM. GM doesnt use a drop center section and Toyota does

Stay away from the 28 spline versions and if you can afford it get some 35 spline shafts. That being said I love my 60.

The f9 is strong in stock form in my opinion to survive 38's It will need a Truss that goes from axle that covers the whole back of the axle. Trussing the top wouldnt be a bad idea either.

Also 38's would be at the high end of 31 spline axles, unless you had some QUALITY aftermarket axles. 35 spline axles would be much better.

If I had to choose and everything was equal (including cost) I would still run the 9". The d60 weighs so Much more, and requires you either run 8 lug, or aftermarket hubs to run anything else. That being said.. it is a full floating axle.. which makes it a lot stronger then the 9".

BTW I am running the 9" in my project.

Have you thought about a GM 14 bolt? Came in many trucks and is very stout. Some pick that over the d60 because its cheaper, easier to find in junkyards and will take a beating in stock form

9" can be full floater also. I always heard 37" tires for 9" but a lot of factors come into play also. Vehicle weight, horsepower & torque of motor, type of terrain, your driving style, parts put into the housing. Ect ect. Personally I wouldn't be afraid to run 40's under a 9".

Get ready for a flame Fest. The 14b hangs rather low compared to others. However it can be shaved. Some go so far as to make it a 13b. That being said I would still go with it (like it will actually happen) because I came from the K5 world with no D60 rears. Apparently in high hp situations the 60's have a habit of breaking pinion shafts.

I would go with a 14bFF. they are just tough. but so is the 9". I have a few buddy's running 14b/9" with 40" tires.. no issues. both are running moser shafts and locked.
