Lunchbox in a HP D30?
Hey guys, looking for some experience advise. I'm planning to re-gear soon and throw a lock-right in my HP d30. I came across an old thread that said it's not recommended to run a locker in a HP D30 without disconnect hubs? Y'all know of any reason why? This is my DD and only sees moderate wheeling 3 or 4 times a month, I'm SC so there really isn't a worry about driving in ice/snow conditions. I only use 4wd for crawling big hills and minor rocks. Have any of you guys running this type of set up had any issues?

There are no reason's not to run one in your case as the only time you will ever notice it is when your in 4wd. I run a full case Detroit locker in mine ft. and rear have no problems.

Have you checked out the powertrax grip pro? It's a full case ls that's not much more than a a lunchbox. might be a little milder than a locker plus gives the added strength of a full case replacement locker.

Sweet! Thanks for the feedback guys. I didn't think there would be an issue, but I tend to over think things.
Buuuuttt...... While I'm picking y'all's brains. I may be coming in to a little extra cash soon, and can't decide between a Tru-trac LSD or a no slip synchronized locker for the 8.25. I would like to keep street driveability best as possible without having to constantly worry about coasting around corners, but also want the best bang for the buck since they are virtually the same price. What y'all think?

In a perfect world id choose a selectable like an ARB, OX, or Eaton. But you're talking a substantial investment. I may wind up running a lunchbox in mine as well, definitely putting a spartan in my rear axle in the meantime.
By the way if you don't already have gears and install kits, check out Rawkhaus. They have smoking deals on front and rear gear sets and complete install kits. Thats where I got mine, gears, master install kits, new 3.73+ front carrier all for right under 500 bucks. (no I'm not affiliated with them at all, just by far the best deals I've found and customer service was great)

Dito, if I could I'd run selectable lockers front and rear but that kind of cash just ain't in the cards. I've got a quote from Rawkhaus and will probably be getting my gears there. I just happened to come across a smoking deal on the D30 carrier on Amazon ($59 to the door) so I couldn't pass that up. Already have a Lock-Rite I bought off Satericalhen damn near a year ago just sitting in the garage.

I called PowerTrax support on this very issue when I went to install Lockrite in my D30 without disco. It was 2 years ago so I don't remember the fellas name but real nice and what he said to was "It is recommended to have a disco in case the unit encounters a reference it can't understand". What exactly that means is hard to describe but in theory a condition such as the vehicle pitching down hill and going into a turn could leave the locker stuck engaged and you wouldn't be able to steer. Well that's the theory and google searching I did find someone describe that scenario happening to them. I did go ahead and install without disco and ran for 2000 miles on a trip through hilly country without issue but then the opportunity came to re-gear with D30 that had disco so I installed the locker in that and that's the way I sit now.

Now that looks interesting! I totally missed Kyle's post about it. Gonna have to do some research. I already have the Lock-Right for the 30 but for the price of that locker it's worth reconsidering. My carrier should be here tomorrow, hope to get the gears ordered next week.
Thanks for all of the feedback guys
