What do lockers do? and what is the Off-Road advantage of them? and if you could only do front or rear which would you do?

 

lockers make both wheels spin giving better traction. locking only front or rear is matter of opinion. its been a matter of debate for years

If you wheel your rig the single best thing in my opinion you can do is install a locker.
If you don't have a locker your 4x4 is really two wheel drive, one in the front and one in the rear. A locker, not a LSD gives you twice the traction on the axle it is in.

 

The best explination Ive seen yet, with a locker only in the rear, you now have the same traction in 2WD as in 4WD without lockers. A friend of mine has a prerunn toyota, I have a 4WD toyota he can follow me eerywher I go, and I upgraded my rear to th Elocker now go places in 2WD that I couldnt before.

 

Front or rear first depends on what kind of wheeling/driving and personal preference.

 

Can you just put a locker in the front and not in the back? I don't plan to but i have always wanted to know and have asked several different people but no one had an answer.

 

^^^ yes you can, same as you can put a locker in the rear and not the front

 

the front rear thing is all personal preference how ever on a Dana 30 you will break more often locked then open and the 8.25s will take lockers well and up to a 35 with out much worry so take that for what its worth

If you drive on the street a lot, you might try to find somebody who does and take a ride and see if you like it.

 

A locker is something at school right? You know, to put books in? HA HA Joking!!!!!!

On a serious note, as stated above, open front and open rear is only 2 wheel drive. With a locker, either front or rear, that gives you 3 wheel drive. With a locker front AND rear, you have true 4 wheel drive.

When my XJ was my DD, I had an Aussie in the rear, and open front. That was a good set up for me. Hope this helps you out.

 

Where you install it also depends on what type of locker you get. If you get a manual locker that can be turned on and off, then front or rear makes no difference when driving on the road. With an auto locker or lunchbox locker, you might be better off putting it in front due to the fact that it will only be "activated" when torque is applied to it, so it will only be on when you are in 4wd (offroad). An auto locker in the rear may lead to a little more tire wear...off road though its up for debate which location is better- I am locked front and rear and I never get stuck.

 

I like to crawl over things so I need my fronts to turn together. I will put a locker in the front first for that reason. Others want it in the rear for various other reason.
