Default Lockers

Ok so this year when I get my income tax return I want to get lockers for my jeep. I was wondering which would be best to get first the front or the rear? cause I can't afford both since they are crazy expensive lol. I was thinking maybe the front cause it would have the most traction with the engine being right above the tires.

Also I was wondering what most people prefer like air or electric and which brand?

IMO.. Rear first. If I had the money I would do an ox or electric.. If you don't drive it on the street too much go powertrax (automatic locker)

Do you have an 8.25 or d35?

Ok what is it the late 90's explorer that has that axle? And is it a direct bolt up?

What size tires you plan on running? A d35 isn't THAT weak...

Pre 96 Explorers have the 8.8, which is a bit stronger than the 8.25. It would need some custom fabrication work to fit though, and I believe its a bit wider. You can get a Chrysler 8.25 out of a 91-01 XJ. More specifically, they only came with XJs that have *no ABS* and pre-97 8.25s are not worth the effort. In 97 they updated to 29 spline shafts with slightly larger diameter, although if you go with an 8.25 the only place that makes lockers for them is Lockright and Aussie (both autolockers.)

P.S. regardless of tire size, I would recommend against putting money into a D35. For not much extra money you can get something better, and have confidence that you wont break an axle.

Just cause it's worth saying again.. DO NOT INVEST LET ALONE LOCK THE D35. While the super 35 upgrade is a nice option, never good to polish a turd.

As to C8.25 29 Spline options for lockers. I know ARB also makes a locker for that axle. I've heard of people using a powertrax no slip in them as well so that is likely another option.. It's likely that you can get most lockers for the C8.25

Ok so to lock the rear I want a c8. 25 with the 29 spline or I could get an 8.8 and fab it to fit. So then what about the front is it ok to lock the D30?

Yes the D30 front can handle up to 35in tires locked or 33in tires locked if you really beat on it

Yeah, or you could get a D44 out of an older Cherokee, but those are pretty rare. As for the D30 you'll be fine. Theres some guy who runs 38s on a locked D30, but it has the Super 30 kit and a truss. His XJ is badass, D30s front and rear so dual steering. He says he's never had a problem with it.

Two things.

8.8's are narrower than 8.25's

and some 96's are 29 spline too.
