Be seen many posts on whether to get one locker or another but I have yet to see anyone discuss whether it's better to have mud terrain tires or some sort of locker/lsd with all terrain.

 

It all depends on the purpose. Personally its at with lsd in the rear at the moment. I can get anywhere I want and I'm not fall enough to go where the Mt would help.

I reality your trying to compare tuna to motor oil.

 

A lunch box locker is cheaper and easier to install,A full carrier locker is pricey to buy and have installed.What it comes down to you need both lockers and off road tires,One with out the other can only get you so far.And if you try hard you can still get stuck with lockers and off road tires.

 

And now you know why nobody has compared the two.

 

All very true, like when it snows you put on snow tires up north. M/T tires if you off road a lot in lots of different terrains is a must and like said I have to use my winch at times with them installed.

 

Just depends on your use / purpose and cash in pocket.

If you need tires, then buy MT's or a good A/T
If your tires are good then I'd rather spend my cash on a lunch box rear locker

 

With off road tires the brand and style can very from state to state on what works best for where you are.I would talk to some of the local wheelers see what tires they love and what ones they hated.

 

I can cite you an example with my XJ a 4wd using the same M/T tires a set of 33x12:50x15's. After I installed Detroit lockers both front and rear in it and running on a well known trail to me I was able to make it several miles further in 2wd than I ever had before being forced into 4wd. The locked rear made that much difference in traction I was amazed and so was my wife. The tires were aired down to 13# like always as that a lot of difference in traction and ride off road.

 

Lockers are good no matter what kind of trails you are on.

Where I am, there is no mud. 50% of the jeeps I see on the local trails are on Goodrich KO ATs. Most of the rest are on other ATs. If I was more hardcore and drove different trails, it might be different even here.

But if you have mud you may need MTs.

MTs don't really cost much more the ATs so get the ones that work where you are or the loudest ones you can stand.

If you already have ATs, get locked.

 

Sold. I don't think budget will allow front and rear. Which would be most important and are lunchbox lockers ok for daily driver? We don't have ice or snow here. Just mud and rain.

 

My daily drivers have had lunchbox lockers in them for close to 25 of the last 30 yrs.......rear only.

Only time they didn't was when it was a car.

 

good tires negate the need for lockers.....IF the wheels are on the ground...

I have seen guys with lockers and swampers get stuck.A lot of it can be driver skill or just luck.

 

good tires do help a lot, but not having a locker is only going to have one good tire doing all the work in some cases. this was a good read
