If your electrical system has the juice for it, I'd recommend HID. As long as you're not using them on the road for headlights, you can get quite a few lumens from just a few amps in almost any H3 bulb housing. They're suitable for long range pencil beams or close-up flood. On the other hand, if you're just talking about lighting the immediate area of your jeep for night crawling, LED's are more durable for under-side mounting and don't have bulbs to replace. I'm not very impressed with LED's long-range throw, and they can be pricey, but the durability and low draw on your alternator are certainly advantageous.

OP is looking for Offroad lights not headlights
Offroad lighting > led headlights
I am running a pair of 7" Tuff Stuff 35watt Hid's on my XJ they are very bright I can light up tree lines on the other side of a canyon about 400-500 yards away . I intend on getting 2 more for my YJ
I have yellow filters I use for snowy and dusty conditions
I have more pics of them in my build thread, I can tell you since I installed these lights on night runs I am usually the lead dog now since they are so bright, They are bright enough to blind people during the day also.

I feel like HID's in some offroad housings would be the best price/performance ratio.
LED's get pricy for models that can throw light far, but they are great for area flood lighting around your rig.
