light switches
Can factory fog light switches handle after market lights? This may seem like a stupid question, I just don't want a fire in my lap.
Also, is there a better alternator than stock for running lights? I'm going to run four lights (don't know specs yet, I want to make sure the alternator can handle it first).

first off, no stupid questions here.
-as long as you used the switch with a relay you would be fine. the switch handles a small current when the circuit is closed. the relay is then switched to a closed circit pos and the main current is passed through to other wires, not including the switch.
-there are always better alternators, depends on how much $ youre looking to spend. What year jeep? the 90's alt is 90 AMp the 2000's ish switched to a 117AMP. I replaced my stock 90 with a BIG powermaster 170 AMP'r. it took some serious mods to the mount. I run 8 AUX lights and a sub sound system off that and it keeps the battery topped off great.
- you could find a stock 117 amp alt for reasonable price. while youre at it, you might aswell replace the battery (if it needs it) and the harnesses between battery-starter- and alt

The switches I got were off of an 87 i believe. I don't know if that makes a difference. I wanted to maintain a stock look. I figured on running a relay with what ever lights I get. I just want to avoid any problems. I don't know a lot about the electrical part of things.

the best way to learn electrical stuff is to wire light, blow fuses, sweat of your brow haha. thats how I did it. if its a relay set up... a switch is a switch ... Unless its old and there is corrosion or wear which could inhibit electrical conductivity. not 100% on the dakota alt. Dodge is Chrysler... Jeep is Chrysler. so I could deffinetly see how they would manufacture alts to fit several cars. you will know instantly by bolt pattern, then size, then pulley set up
