I work with a lot of insurance companies on a daily basis. Ameriprise being one of the more difficult to deal with, both from a repair standpoint and for the policy holder.

Heres my personal opinion just from having dealt with all of them extensively.

Top Tier: State farm, Allstate, AAA, USAA

Mid tier (also decent to deal with)- Geico, Farmers/21st Century

More difficult to deal with/wouldnt necessarily recommend - Progressive, Natl General, ameriprise, met-life, liberty mutual, esurance.

 

only time i ever needed pics to insure a vehicle when when i was getting historic insurance for my cars. never for anything that i just wanted liability on..

 

every company ive ever had, never asked for mods or photos. Vin #, Miles driven per year, purpose and full coverage or liability only. Sounds like you need to get a new company.

 

My Safeco insurance never asked if my 96 XJ was lifted. It wasn't lifted, but they point is they never asked and they didn't care when they were taking my money for years.

However, when I got rearended at a stop light (though no fault of my own) and the offending Honda Civic went under my XJ, the insurance investigator asked me on the phone if my Cherokee was lifted. I said no. He came out to inspect my XJ to verify that I had no lift.

Point being, reputable insurance companies will check before taking your money. Questionable insurance companies will check before you take their money. If you are lifted, your legal standing is weakened in the event of a crash, even if the crash isn't your fault. Insurance companies are looking for an excuse to either charge you more money, or avoid paying on legit claims. A lift gives them a good pretext to treat you unfairly, even when the crash isn't your fault.

My current XJ is a 99 XJ with lift 1.25" front, 1.75" rear, and 30" tires. To a person who knows XJs it's obviously lifted, but the general public can't tell if its lifted. It fits 30 x 9.5 R15 or 245/75R16 ATs (I've tested them both). I like LCOG lifts for better cornering, and also because insurance companies don't know it's lifted. My 99 XJ was visually inspected by Farmers insurance guy before they'd sell me insurance. He looked at it and walked around it. He didn't know it's slightly lifted, or he didn't care. Plus it corners great.

I think it's whether it's obviously lifted that they care about. Minor-LCOG lifts they don't notice or don't care about.

 

If you look at speed only ...true.

The point wasn't the money...it was the fact that as the power level OR modification level goes up, so does the liability and chance that something will go wrong and they will have to pay.......and it seems that insurance company just didn't want to deal with it.

A little bit more ???.....a Hellcat would cost me 5 times what I am currently paying a year for a 2012 Ram, 2 cherokees, a bass boat, and a camper (all have full coverage $100 ded, and the boat has an agreed upon 50k value)

I had an IROC-Z back in 86....and I was told by a major insurance company (I think it was Allstate) that they didn't want to insure it, but if I paid 'X' amount per year, they would....that 'X' was twice as much as a corvette, cuz for 2-3 years there, they were stolen more than vette were.

When i was a teenager way back when, being the gear head i was i got two speeding tickets. Allstate dropped me like a hot potato..right or wrong!
I will never ever insure with Allstate again. Maybe they changed their policy but no matter.

Far as Farmers, yes they honor their claims but they are ripoffs money wise.
I had my house burglarized a few years ago and they did ok honoring my claims.
However, in addition to switching my auto insurance from Farmers to Geico, i also switched to Geico for home insurance. Cut my bill in half. And it was a royal PITA getting Farmers to cancel my policy with them.

 

Hmm. I'm using Farmers. Maybe I should shop for a better price. I do like that they don't notice or don't care about my lift though.

 

Teenager with two speeding tickets, I wouldnt necessarily blame your insurance company for dropping you.

 

Also something to note when shopping for insurance. There are a few companies out there that wont use aftermarket parts for repairs, OEM and recycled OEM only. Of course some exceptions like glass, radiators/ac condensers. But they will only use OEM bumpers, body panels, etc.

State farm and AAA are the only two that I know of that use OEM only.

 

Doesn't matter, it still left a bad taste after all these years!
I get occasional telemarketing calls these days from Allstate persuading me to switch over,
I tell them to $%^&*^& and hang up.

 

I have an 85XJ and 96F150 insured through Farm Bureau and it costs me about $350 every 6 months for liability plus $25 per year for membership.( I think it is $60 if not from a farm)

Several years ago my exGF totaled my 99 TransAm. Told them we ran off the road, they went to the shop we had it towed to and after one look cut a check for full retail book, not a single problem at all. Of course I have been with them since I was 16yo (49 now) so maybe they give me a little off for that too.

 

My agent anything i wanted full coverage on he would say bring it by so he can look at it.If it was just liability he asked year make model and gave me a number over the phone.And yes a insurance can tell you to kick rocks if you have mods they don't like.A lift will change your center of gravity so you could roll the jeep easier then a stock one.

 

I'm sorry but I couldn't pass this part up. You don't have a LCOG lift. What you have is a small lift, sir. Or is this what the kids are calling it now when they only go 1.75"?

I carry full coverage on mine and all my company wanted was a few photos of all the options I had added to for the added policy limit, including lift, winch, bumpers, everything.
