Wondering if anyone wud suggest upgrading axels after installing lift and 33-35" x12.5 tires (haven't decided on if I'm gonna trim and fit yet or pony up the doe for the biggins).jus a mild trail rider,not boulder flexing or using a long arm kit.also while I'm in the diffs shuld I plan on a gear swap so I can go hw speeds?

 

If you're not wheeling hard you should be fine with stock axels, but you'd need to regear. Don't get 35s if your just going to DD it.

 

guessing by your name you drive a 1995 inline 6. so the front axle is the hpD30 with 297 ujoints and the rear end is crap? I'd just run a 33x10.5 and leave the stock axles for a mild trail truck. yes fuel and power will suffer but that's jeeping. you can always upgrade later if you dont like it. if you do decide to regear and lock a rear axle swap is recommended.

 

It's not my daily driver tho my daily commute is all of about 5mi.but jus to save money I think I'll go with 33s.but most wheeling spots aren't exactly in my backyard so I'd still like to be able to go 70mph.how do I kno what's a good gear ratio to still maintain or increase power but still b capable of highway speeds?

Oh and @atmos,very observant of you.lol yes that is a part of jeepin as is appearance of my rig IMO that is why I wud rather have the 12.5s then the 10s.do u think that will put to much stress on my rig? And why is it the stock rear is such crap? I think I've read most ppl swap out for a ford 9"

 

what is your current ratio? or what transmission do you have. people do 70 on the freeway with stock gears. they just have slow acceleration and struggle with hills sometimes. generally 4.56 is a good ratio for offroad/street with 33's (should put you near stock RPM's). deepest you can go with stock front axle is 4.88 which would over gear you. you will rev higher on the streets but love the acceleration and love the power off road

 

No, most people will swap in a 29 spine 8.25", Dana 44, or a Ford 8.8"

9" aren't as popular as they once were due to availabilty and not-so-stellar aftermarket support as of late.

 

What rear do you have? If you got the dana 35 then yeah, it is junk. You might have the 8.25 which will be fine, just the later 29 spline is much stronger than the 27 spline in '91-'96 Xjs

 

True.and it's worth not taking a 8mi hike out of the woods in the dark.thats why I ask.but trying to stay cost effective in ths build cause I will b purchasing a home soon.so is axels swaps excessive for 33x12s or shuld a fair well on my stock sticks?

 

well people usually post their specs to help us give you a good answer. so I just had to make some assumptions lol. you care about appearance so you want wider tires? lots of guys will tell you the 10.5's will perform just fine. it's a matter of preference. it wont put a ton of extra stress, I was just making a suggestion for a ligther tire that's easier to turn with stock gears. and 1995 only had 2 options for rear end (D35 or 27 spline 8.25) neither of which are worth putting any money IMHO. if you want gears and a locker, a swap is highly recommended

 

Not sure.its an auto but I've only had it about two weeks now and haven't researched the axels or transfer case.its a country model if that helps? Lol can't I acquire that info using my vin?

 

if you are going to keep an open differential and stock gears (basically put no money into them at all), yes stock axle is generally sufficient. although some people have bad luck..

 

I have always been a fan of the Dana 44.how direct wud a swap be? They say the only stupid questions are the ones you already kno the answers to, so ill ask,if I do swap out my rear for one of the many options does that mean ill hafta swap the front axel to match?

 

Go to the jeep website... Click on contact us... Insert last 8 numbers of vin and ask for a build sheet. Will tell you everything you want to know. Took about 24 hrs to get mine... since it was sent on a weekend.
