Its a 2001, it was lifted by a guy that sold it before doing an alignment, the next guy drove it "as is" for a week then sold it to another guy that drove it once and broke the front carrier, 8 months later... its in my garage now. I have never had an XJ before so now I am neck deep into investigating the parts on this poor XJ. List time? OK
Inline 6 Engine
Eisen Warner 4 Transmission
231 Transfer Case
Dana 30 low pinion - broken carrier
Dana 40 - must be stock gear, I will open up later this week and find out for sure
Rough Country 6.5 inch lift kit w/long arms... I think, I talked to RC support and I now have locations of where part numbers will be stamped/painted, I will get answers this week.
35" Tires
"The Plan"
Turn this XJ into a properly working Lifted XJ for trail / heavy snow use for a year... maybe 2 then re-sell.
"My Questions"
Should I replace the Dana 30 with a 40? is it worth it if I plan on selling later? Or just fix up the 30?
If I fix the 30... what would be an ideal locker? Or auto locker? Like a Torsen set? Either way I plan on setting the ratio for 35" tires.
Should I replace the 30 with another 30 with high pinion? Is it worth it?
Is the transmission ok as is? Should I replace it? Should I replace the torque converter?
If I replace the torque converter what is a good stall for the inline-6?
Im new to this forum and to Jeeps so I apologize for everything I did wrong in this post
If You can install gears yourself add whatever front and rear. Otherwise get a junkyard high pinion D30, or perhaps off Craigslist and add a lunchbox locker. No sense in dumping big coin into a D44, you'll likely never get your money back for many upgrades, mainly if your just going to sell this off.
I can't speak to a good T/C stall? Never heard of this.
Ask away, this is a great forum with many knowkedgeable and helpful people.

Welcome.......do some reading and learn about what you have and see what others have done that has & hasn't worked.
Much less money to learn from someone else's mistake than it is your own
4.0l engine (yes it is an inline 6, but few people refer to it that way)
aisin warner ie AW4 transmission, and as long as it in good health, it will be fine
it is either a dana 30, 35 or 44...there is no dana 40
stock torque converter will work just fine
Heck yeah, this forum has opened my mind to the XJ a hell of a lot, I am hoping to have a smooth driving XJ in a few months without spending a buttload of cash on it.
The 4.0" is running great, transmission shifts smooth, I think I got one hell of a deal on this XJ.
You're more likely to have a Chrysler 8.25 back there unless you have ABS then you for sure have a "Turdy Five".I've never seen a late model XJ with a D44 in the US.

Aisin Warner / AW4, is a 4 speed transmission. It's a durable transmission. You should consider an external transmission cooler, due to the larger tires & if you are going to be driving it on the trails.
Do you plan on driving this on the street? If so, you might want to get some Rugged Ridge or Bushwhacker fender flares.
I'd do a D30 High Pinion. Just be aware of the brake rotor / wheel bearing hub design change that happened in / about 1999.5.
For the locker, I'd go with something that suits your style of driving.
I plan on driving it on the street when the snow gets deep, which it does often here. I saw a good deal on the Bushwacker stuff on Amazon, like $200 off msrp. Where would I get a high pinion? Are they only in older XJ's? Should I look for 1999 or something at the scrap yards?

High pinion Dana 30 only comes in the XJs 99 and older. The 96+ ones have the larger u joints, but your axleshafts will swap into an older axle. Your rear axle is either a Chrysler 8.25 or Dana 35. There is no Dana 40 there is Dana 44s but they came in much older XJs.
I had some time to look things over a bit on the XJ last night, I am pretty sure the track bar was installed backwards, is that even possible? lol
The rear leaf shackle is sitting at roughly 90 degrees vertical, eww. The drive line angles are not even close to safe. I have to tear down everything and start over from the looks of it. Is it possible to install the leaf springs backwards? Are the bushings the same size?
I'm going to speculate it is possible to install the leaf springs in backwards. The first problem I think you would see, would be bolting up the rear axle. The rear axle might not center in the wheel well. I've replaced leaf springs in a 2000 & 2001 XJ. I'd used the Crown HD leafs. I don't recall having a problem, so I believe it must have been pretty obvious, which way the leaf springs went in. The bushings are different. The bushings are known as "Main Eye" & "Shackle End".
Pictures of your issues & questions would also help out.
you can get a high pinion d30 with large joints in an xj from day one. you just have to know what to look for. (look for abs and non disco) from 87 right through to 99. early ones with abs and non disco came in the limiteds. but 87-89 had caliper brackets, so you would just have to swap out your knuckles. easy job. to use your brake calipers. also, 99 had a split mid year for hub units and brake rotor hat heights. again, easy, if you know what to do.
