Default Jerry Can Side Mount

I was wondering if anyone here could give me some advice on mounting a military-style jerry can mount to the side of my Cherokee. I attached a picture of the bracket and also the location of where I would like to mount it. What would I need to do to have it securely mounted in that location? Any help would be appreciated.

That part of your jeep is really thin and may bend under the weight of it. I honestly wouldn't mount it there.

i wouldnt put it there either, but if you absolutely had to, make sure there is some kind of reinforcement on the inside to help hold it up.

This. Even if you reinforce it it may still bow the panel out slightly due to the weight distribution (especially if you plan on keeping it full). Maybe something like 12x2" flat stock, around 1/4" thick. That area is thin sheet metal, not designed to have 40lbs+ hanging from it with such a small footprint.

All of the above in addition to the fact of it being easily torn off sticking out on the side like that if you rubbed against a tree or ledge.

That would be the biggest concern. I would recommend maybe moving the mounting area to the back lower corner more if you do it. My tire carrier is mounted to the quarter panel with a 1/4" reinforcement plate and holding a 33" spare with no issues.

With 31s.

Where (or what) did your tire carrier come from?

It was an optional carrier that Jeep made for Cherokees in the late '80s and early '90s.

I've been running a 33 on mine with no issues too.

Alright thanks for all the input, really appreciate it. I think I'm going to go with the suggestion to mount it lower on the quarter panel and then just reinforce it with 1/4" steel. This may be a stupid question but what kind of hardware/bolts would be the best way to secure it? I'm pretty new to modifications.

I wouldn't mount it on the quarter at all,Off road you'll end up knocking it off.A lot of off road xjs have dented up quarters from hitting trees and rocks.

That's a bad idea. You would be better off mounting it on the rear hatch. Even that's not a good idea as it is fiberglass but if you feel that it's a must, definitely don't put it on the quater panel.

He has a '97+ model so his hatch is steel or aluminum.

I really want that tire carrier but there isn't a single one that I've found (at a junk yard).
