Default Jeep engine won't crank, won't start!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hello guys,

First off, just want to say hi to all the members here on the cherokee forum. I've been reading for the past couple of months and been getting some great tips for a couple of you guys threads.

SOOOOOO, my Jeep decides it dosen't like me anymore and will not start at all.

To give you a little history, I just change the PCM about two months ago, so I know its not the computer. Me and my friend also JUST changed the NSS and yesterday put in a new starter. NOTHING........

Before we put in the starter, we would jump the jeep from the starter soliniod to just get it started, but after a whie even THAT wouldn't start it (no crank, just silence!).

So we are at our wits end with this. Starter relay was tested and seem to be fine (were testing it again today just in case).

We don't know what else it could be. CPS was replaced 5 months ago, so that should stil be working fine.

Below is a link to a video of me trying to turn over the car. I figured this would give you guys a better example of what I'm going thru.

Please help if you can. Thanks!!

EDIT: I think I posted this in the wrong tech section. I don't know how to move post though so I'm hoping mods would move this to the correct forum. Again, if you guys can help it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not really clear on your story. Are you saying the Jeep still would start after installing the new Nuetral Safety Switch? And it started right up until you removed and replaced the starter with a new one. Now, it won't do anything? Do i have this right?

The reason I ask is this problem you decribed is typical of a misaligned NSS. When it is not adjusted right you won't get cranking or anything.

If just the new starter install is causing a no crank situation, I'd say you got a lemon starter or you have a battery cable issue.

A bad ignition switch can cause a no crank situation, too.

Thanks guys for the replys.

To make the story a bit clearer, the car started not starting about a week ago, so my friend and I would jump the starter siloniod to get it going until we could get it fixed.

We figured it was the neutral safety switch that was making it not start after we bought a new starter relay and that didn't fix the problem. When we put the NEW NSS in, it started right up for about 3 or 4 times, then it died again. This time we couldn't get it started from jumping the siloniod, so I went and bought a new starter yesterday.

After we put it in, we tried to start the car up again and......no go! Hope that clears it up a bit more for you.

99 Purple XJ, I'll check the battery terminals and let you know. But wouldn't bad terminals mean it would also affect power (like radio, lights, etc.) as well? Cause right now I have no power issues, just starter issues at the moment.

Thanks guys for your help.

So your starter isn't doing anything at all? You don't hear any noise from the starter whatsoever?

Just figured I'd ask this, you check your oil lately?

Hey guys,

Another thing: For some reason, ever since we put in the new starter, when I try to start the vehicle, not only will it not crank, but now the battery goes all the way down to 9 on the gauge.

I uploaded a video to show you guys what I'm talking about. This is strange.

BTW, I just bought this battery a month ago, so I know for a FACT its not my battery.

Maybe alt?

This is getting kinda frustrating.....

Video is below. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Hey Voodoo,

No noise at all from the starter, and its brand new so I KNOW its not that.

Also, as I'm sitting in my car now, my battery just went dead right after I posted that video????? Something is draining it or something, how could it be the battery when I just bought it?

I'll check the oil now.

Takes a lot out of the battery to move a jammed starter...

I only ask about the oil because, well... If the starter ain't moving at all, you just welded the poor engine together.

Get a wrench on the crank pulley and try to turn it clockwise. If it ain't moving for the life of you, well... yeah.
