Quite a while ago I saw a picture of the Egyptian built Jeep J8. Ever since then I have wanted that hood scoop. Well, this is my XJ edition of the functional fresh air hood scoop. Tell me what you think of it. If anyone is interested, I took a few pics while designing and building and could post them.

Dude, looking at your pic, your Jeep is like the 2-door brother of mine! Same tires, wheels, color, even the vent shade on the side windows!

Awesome!

Here are a couple more pics from the start of the project. I wanted to use the stock air box and air filter. Coming off the front of the box wouldn't work, couldn't get around the radiator cap. The engine side of the air box is blocked by the power steering reservoir. So, that left the back side. First I had to decide how to run the pipe without interfering with the shock mounting bolt or the master cylinder. Then I marked where to cut the hole.

It's raining hard right now. I'll go check it out, but don't think to much water will get in there because of the hood scoop and the slope angle of the hood. I don't know if you have noticed it, but the air box has drain holes in the bottom of it too.

Thats REALLY cool man, very creative!

Could you tell a difference in preformance at all?

And What exactly did you use for the actual scoop?

does the tube stick up an inch or so above the hood level when closed?
if not, it would be a good idea to do so, that way it won't let water just run in if you dip under a bit.
you could also put a pre-filter on there to help too.

It's raining hard and I just went through the "Cherokee" wash to get some mud off the suspension and axles. No water issues. Here's a parts used list.

Plastic rain gutter with ID 2 1/8 inch by 2 7/8 inch.
2 - 1 1/4 inch spacers
3 - 45 degree upright elbows
1 - 45 degree flat elbow

1 - Plastic rain gutter down spout starter sleeve. This is larger than the other rain gutter parts so that when the hood is closed, the other gutter parts fit inside of it.
1 - Rugged Ridge 11352.12 Black Hood Scoop
Nylon bolt and washer
Plastic epoxy

The hole in the air box is cut and one of the 1 1/8 inch spacers is mounted in the hole. Making the first 90 degree elbow was a little tricky because of clearance issues. One of the pics shows the wheel well hole that I used for mounting the new breather duct. Where to elbow up to the hood was a little tricky too because of hood supports. The forth pic shows fitting and leveling the flat 45 degree elbow. Strait up from that point is into a hood support, so two 45 degree upright elbows will take you to a flat spot on the hood.
