I pulled the pin, C-clips and axle shafts. After I removed the retainer bolts, the open carrier came right out. Reverse assembly and the LSD is in. Tada! 2qts of 80-90 and some LSD additive and I take it for it's maiden voyage with LSD.
Well it didn't go as planned. Acceleration seems just fine, BUT on deceleration I hear a 'whirring' sound. I'm guessing I don't have the bearing cups set properly or something. Anyone have any tips?
Is there a certain way the retainers and bearing cups go in or a way to adjust them? I'm kinda lost.

so you changed the whole carrier and didnt check backlash or the gear pattern?
There are adjustable side retainers on the 8.25, did you readjust them or touch them at all? I dont remember being able to remove the carrier without loosening the collars.

pinion depth/backlash is wrong.
changing the carrier requires re-setting up the backlash and possibly even the wear pattern.
not to mention that just simply removing the carrier on an 8.25 means you will have to re adjust the backlash because the carrier shims are adjustable and have to be reset when removed.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to axles. I kind of giggle at myself for doing such a thing without the proper tools. (no shims or guages to speak of)
Basically I popped open the rearend and unbolted the open carrier and bolted in the LSD carrier. The guy I bought the LSD from did send the bearing cups, but I had to reuse the collars I had. I put the carrier in and held it in with the axle shafts then squeezed the bearing cups and adjusters so the carrier wouldn't wobble and then tightened the retainers. (assuming I'm using the right names for parts)
I did not do anything with backlash or pinion depth, as nothing looked adjustable. So I have a lot of reading to do on how to adjust things.
Thanks, this helps. Off to google.

I will tell you the easiest way to start.
Pull wheels and axles.
Loosen the bearing cap bolts so they are just finger tight.
Loosen the pass side adjuster 2-3 turnstighten down the drivers side tight.
Check and make sure there is no backlash. The carrier will be hard to turn.
Back off the drivers side adjuster 1/4 turn.
Tighten pass side adjuster tight.
Tighten bearing caps to spec.
Spin carrier both ways to make sure bearings are seated.
With a magnetic base dial indicator measure backlash.
If its too much,
Loosen the cap bolts, loosen pass side adjuster 1/16 turn,
Tighten drivers till tight, make sure pass is tight. Retorque caps spin carrier and recheck.
If its too tight do the opposite, but this will get you real close.
