Insstrument cluster swap?
Hey brain trust! Just bought a '99 to replace the one that got wrecked last weekend. I'm keeping the wrecked one to scavenge parts from.
The new toy has the base cluster, speedo, gas gauge, and dummy lights, can't stand it. I'd like to swap in the full gauge pkg from the wrecked Sport. Is this doable? Straight plug n play, or will I need to swap sending units as well? Worse yet, are the computers even compatible? Differences between the Sport and the new one; Sport has the NP242 TC, no abs, full gauges, no cruise. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...8869376733.jpg New one has the NP231 TC, abs, cruise, dummy lights. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...02be2d1615.jpg Otherwise, both are 4.0/auto/4X4 power everything 4Dr models. And yes, an axle swap is in the works too. 😁 |
cluster is a direct swap.
Mileage is stored in the cluster, though, so you'll need to note it. |

Yep. Everything will just work with no other modifications.

That's actually wrong I believe .. You will need to swap your oil pressure and engine temp sending units. The dummy lights are only an on/off switch that turns on the light on the dash when a problem comes up, the gauge is a variable resistor unit. I'd recommend MOPAR sending units, they will ask you if you have dummy lights or gauges.

I'm open to being wrong, however. Honestly it takes like 10 minutes to do the swap if you've never done it before, and probably 5-10 minutes after starting to verify gauges are working properly. |
It might be possible to simply swap the mileage part of the clusters to keep everything correct. I know you aren't suppose to mess with that stuff but when I swapped my clusters I got the new one from a much newer vehicle with a big difference in mileage. I tried swapping just the mileage part and found the years weren't compatible bolt on wise. However I found it was possible to disassemble the numbered part of the mileage gauge so the numbers could be rolled forwards or backwards. (Illegal I know) Once it was taken apart enough by turning just the 1/10th wheel you could roll the miles. If you get your finger flicking fast enough you can knock off a mile a second! I would just hold it in my lap as I watched tv and kept spinning it. I think over the course of a week I added the 60,000 miles I needed. LOL

You can reprogram it. Well, maybe not you but it can be reprogrammed. |
I have a video save on YouTube about reprogramming and bench testing it. The software I like around 100 if I remember right, vs having someone else do it which cost around 200 to 300 and takes a week. You can even change the vin if you ever had a problem with a missed matched vin. Highly unlikely but possible.
