Default Injector Upgrade - among other things

Well, the 16 year old has been driving and wheeling his 99XJ for almost a year now. He has done his research, gathered parts and done his own work. The lift took some time, but handles well, rides well and flexes very well. His latest mod is the injector mod. He read a lot, researched, saved his money and spent a fun filled day at the PYP on the last half price weekend. On the other hand, I have learned to be patient and open minded to his method of wrenching.
Any-who, he cleaned and installed the '784' injectors(new seals-even though he thought the ones that he pulled out of the Dodge were fine. LOL), installed a throttle body spacer(I had it in the stockpile from an old project) cleaned the throttle body and reset the PCM. He had already relocated the AIT sensor months ago. It turned over and fired right up. It settled into a much smoother idle than it has had up to now. He was ready for a test drive, but experience (my insistence) required a detailed check for leaks.
The test drive(aka the old 'booty dyno') did not reveal any more power, but it runs much smoother. Idles smooth at a stop and accelerates with much more authority. We got on the highway and headed for some hills. At 65mph with the cruise set we hit some hills. Previously the trans would kick down about 3/4 of the way up a couple of the steeper hills. Now it pulls fine. We will have to see if the mileage improves, but on the idle quality alone it was well worth it. Plus it teaches him how to be a better wrench.

Indeed, great job!

When the computer is reset it enters adaptive memory and 'learns' your driving style. I have been told not to drive it hard during this time if economy is the goal.
But you seem very knowledgeable and likely already know this. lol

The injectors don't add any power on OBD2 vehicles since the computer will just adjust to them but sometimes when replaced you will notice some difference mostly because they are newer and cleaner. Kind of like replacing the plugs and wires or a fuel filter. JP and Petersons did a test years ago with a dyno and the throttle body spacer did nothing and neither did the injectors. A better flowing exhaust and intake will make a bigger difference. Nice to see the younger generation wrenching.
