A friend of mine just bought a (4.0L)1996 grand cherokee limited and it has disc rear brakes on a D35.The only downer of that option is that the e brake is still a drum inside the rotor, unless you scrap e brake parts.

i can see the newspaper article now, " after an inspection of the jeep state police stated the tradegy may have been avoided, if the vehicles rear brake system had not been disabled. the victims family have hired a lawyer, charges of involuntary manslaughter may be pressed "

I don't see the point in rear drums, it's safe to keep my drum brakes on when they don't work just like everyone else's at the places I ride? I've never hauled butt in reverse, that's kinda dangerous, is there a disc swap for the Dana 35? I don't plan to change the diff out, chromoly axles, trussed, welded
This was funny. The man makes a point.
Thats what reverse is for, when do i go over 10 mph? never. and i doubt you could keep up with my jeeps at any park.
If you have ever been to a park with more than 100 vehicles, ive looked, alot of XJs, trucks and buggies don't even have rear brakes...I guess stay away from most parks then

I build mud/swamp buggies so my advice is yes you can remove the rear brakes but you want to leave the empty drum on to shield the bearings from dirt. Now what we do is on the output yoke of the transmission or transfer case, we fab up a plate/fitting for a brake disc and caliper. That way you can still have braking but it sits outta the slop.

Well I just got kicked off another forum for telling this guy how stupid of an idea it is to do away with your brakes. Oh well that forum sucked anyway. FYI he's talking trash about CF over there because he got his feelings hurt.

I have been to parks that do vehicle inspections. And to wheel without half of your brakes is silly. The offroad world can be unpredictable, and not having control of all the tires can put you in some bad situations. I can't possibly imagine he trailers his rig to play in puddles and never go over 10mph.

with no cat, no back brakes... you think he has insurance?
yeah, it's just a mud jeep. i get not wanting to have to clean out the drums all the time. i don't blame him, but when he wants to bash through mud with innocent bystanders all around, then it should become a safety issue. it's easy enough to just do a rear disc swap.
if he stays at home on his own property and wheels all the mud he wants, then yeah, pull the drums and remove all brake parts, unthread the rear brake line at the master cylinder (proportioning valve), then plug that hole.
but if there is anyone around, and you don't tell them you have no rear brakes, i would be even more pissed if you couldn't stop and slid right into me.
he can't be very mature if he went crying to others on another forum.
what did he expect?
guess we went at it all wrong and should've supported his ill decision.
i have a virtual box of kleenix for him.
