That's sick! Looks like yours has been through some heck also! Ugh unfortunately mine is 2wd and ready for 4wd conversion. See if it can compete with the 4runner.

Rolled, flipped, even flown!

That thing will be a beast 2 or 4wd.

I dont mind beating on mine. I might have 20 or 30k in it spread ove 8 ish years. But those new jeeps are crazy spendy.

these are all pretty capabe rigs its pretty cool seeing the pros and cons of all the builds pretty much my only plus side is armour . I can bash through stuff the big tires gracefully walk through. Then sometimes i get held up pivoting on rocks and they get held up being so wide.

Straddling crevices the wide rigs really shine.

So far i see no negative to an auto and 4.88 and lower gears. Manual kinda just sucks gota ride it like a dirt bike on the freaking clutch.

Yes it's a beast for sure. But it belongs in the forest on trail. It'll easily out run a new Jeep. Bashing through **** is always fun! My 4runners stance is 4 inches wider than stock with wheel spacers until I go for the 3.5 inch long travel set up. Way more off road capable with the extra width. Where's are you wheeling? I'm in Ozarks national forest in Arkansas. Endless trails!!

$100k+ off road vehicles amuse me, as the paint and panel damage will usually stop them before traction or clearance

When a young driver totaled my previous XJ, I bought another for $2k and swapped the good bits over

I was breakeven on XJs after he paid me out and kept the wreck, which is the same year as mine, (being a '96, this is important), still drivable, with many good spare parts

XJs are very capable. I think one thing that is going for them is that they are lighter than many of the tube buggies, and that translates into capability.

I don't see a negative but a positive! With your tire size regearing is is the proper thing to do. Reducing stress on axles, engine, and transmission. The Jeep is programmed for close to stock tire size. Correcting the gear ratio to tire size allows you PCM/TCM to operate the way it was programmed to do. Maintaining proper rpm and transmission operation off road and on highway. I have 33's on my 4runner and can't wait to regear for some 35's.

Have you thought about a doubler instead? I have an atlas 4 speed, which the same thing and is real handy in those extreme situations. Do you have a D44 rear?

I think it is a much better option than another regear.

When you do, shims on the outside of the carrier bearing are just as good as those on the inside. Ford, Dana for sure do it now. If you have a spreader you can set up the backlash in about 20 min
