hp 30 gears install, HELP REAL QUICK
hey im in the middle of doing 4.88's up front and putting it back together.
1. the axle already had 4.10s with a lockrite
2. whoever installed these did poop job.
3. i dont have all the gadgets to remove carrier bearings and such.
problem:
bolted it all back in. and the carrier fits too tight. bad preload just need to take out shims on either side
remedy
does anyone have a carrier bearing removal close by i can borrow? or advise on how to make one, etc.?
thanks in advance

A clamshell style puller is going to set you back $300-600.
You can't determine preload by feel.
Sounds like you need to take it to a shop that has experience with gear replacements.

You can get the two pullers you need from harbor freight for under $75. This is your best bet. Or have a shop pull your olds bearings, so they don't get damaged and turn them into setup bearings then buy a new set to have pressed for the final set up

Why are you installing gears without the right tools and no way to set them up? If you remove them, they should be replaced. The cage is very easy to damage. You might be ok, but why take the chance?

thanks for the advise doods. finished up installing the gears. the carrier a little more snug than I wanted it to. but its just fine the way it is. I have plenty of worthy tools. just not a whole lot of expensive specialty tools. we all good. I took her for a ride up the mountain 488 and 37s and locrites are really fun
