If it was me I'd do disc brakes and change the wheel bearing and threw a coat of paint on it. Unless its a diffrent ratio that's where it gets pricey.

It takes some knowledge and special tools not everyone has.

And bad things can happen costing you alot of money if its not done right.

Just a heads up.

Are you regearing or keeping the stock gears?

Just cleaning it up & swapping it in isn't very hard (as long as you have basic mechanic skills & tools). As said above, if you are going to do more than that, like regear and such you'll have to have a drivetrane shop do that... I'm doing a total tear down, regear, disk brake conversion now to my 8.25 so I can rip out my D35. If you're going to do all that, it'll start costing some cash....

Good luck

I do have the tools to take it apart without messing with gears or any of that but Idk if I will need a different gear set up I don't plan on getting bigger tires than 32s I have 31s now and if I do need new gears I will have it professional done by a shop. And will I really need different size shafts? For the record I have a 01 4dr xj aw4 4.5 inch lift and 31s Dana 30 in front with a dana 35 in the rear

I guess our definition of "rebuild" is very, very different.

I have heard that the with 8.25,if you pull the carrier you have to have special tools to get it back to spec.

I would just do like said-disc's,axle bearings, seals,& fluid.

You might want to investigate this situation a little more.

What is your idea of a total rebuild? When I rebuild an axle, I replace everything but the housing itself. New carrier, gears, shafts, all bearings and seals, and brakes. Doesn't really sound to me like you're wanting to do all that though?

If the gears are the same ratio as what you currently have, and nothing is wrong with them, I'd just replace seals and bearings, new brakes, and shafts if you need them.

great thread, used it to re-install my carrier, shows the "special tool" you speak of.
