Default How do I tell if it's a 242 crank?

I am looking to buy a so called stroker motor tomorrow but the owner doesn't know what parts are in it. He says it's a 4.7 but how do I tell? It is supposed to be a '96 block with a newer intake and I can see it has blue injectors (probably Ford?) but that's it.

My question is can I tell what crank from the outside? Hopefully some markings on the outside? Thanks!!

You can't. Usually, even the casting number on the crank ends up inside the block.

If the head's off, you can measure the stroke directly - but I wouldn't do it through the spark plug hole (since you'd be measuring at an angle to the motion, you'll get trig error. Unless you know the angle at which you're measuring, you can't correct it properly.)

Thanks, I bought the motor and I removed the oil pan to see that it's a new crank by csr motorsports. He will call back to discuss the specifics of the crank in the coming days. I see that the stud girdle is spaced out using washers so it looks like it is indeed a stroker crank. Stoked!

Yeah, without tearing the motor down to see the internals... there is no way to tell until you stick that puppy into 4 low and go straight up a mountain without touching the gas pedal!! Stroked mine!
