Hood Vent Idea... help me work this out?

So I was looking at ways to keep my underhood temp down whenever possible, and obviously hood vents were the first thing to come to mind.

Many people say not to worry about rain, just use dielectric grease on everything and it'll be fine... but I don't really trust that advice, and besides, I live in Michigan, having a foot of snow in my engine bay every other week would most likely not be a good thing.

So I was thinking... apart from just swapping hoods between sunny days/rainy days, how could you do a hood vent and have a way to cover it easily and quickly?

Then it hit me.

Granted, in this application, it opens with the throttle.

BUT, it would not be hard at all to make something similar to this and hook it up to a cable that you can use to open/close it from inside the cab.

Has anyone ever tried this?

Please do, and let me know how it goes! I'm going to buy a junk yard hood and draw up some plans. I think I already have it figured out.

It would be completely water tight when closed and use a simple throttle choke cable to open and close.

DUDE! Somebody (and by proxy) you, are freakin GENIUS! I love it. Man..
You could do a ram air, cowl, a slide panel that doesn't actually lift so as to be kinda sleeper style.
Props, friend. Good find. I'm subscribed. I wanna see this baws (pronounced BOSS!! haha) come to fruition!

The only question is... One vent in the center, or two, one on each side of that center dip in the hood?

Older Mopars had the Air-Grabber scoops that were opened and closed by a cable from the drivers seat. Check those out for your linkage/control design. And awesome idea.

J/K can't wait to see what you came up with. I still have the Lebaron hood vents sitting around..might change to this if things look good

Sweet! I think the flaps themselves could be fiberglass or carbon fiber. Use felt or rubber seals to keep water out when closed, like the gas door on a newer Saturn or something.

Finding a cowl induction hood in the wrecking yard is like finding a needle in a hay stack. Good idea, but finding the needed parts will be the problem.

sub.

I am planning on getting another hood from the jy and measure out a cowl hood.
Then cut it lift it, and graft in the sides and finnish off the cowl opening.

While the cool factor of an opening and closeing scoop is a really great idea; making a rain guuter just inside the cowl opening would do just fine.

Sorry OP, not tryin to **** in your cherios, it just depends on how simple or complicated you want to make it.lol

But an awesome idea nonetheless. I would LOVE to see that done. please dont missunderstand my overall point here.

A cowl hood or even vent like that won't do anything for cooling its ment to suck cold air straight in the carb.I'd spend the time and money to get a better radiator and more fans.
