Default heim joint steering

So I've been reading up on building my steering with heim joints and I was wondering why almost everyone uses weld in bungs instead of tapping the actual dom being used as the tie rod and drag link for the heim to thread right into that?

For me I used 1.5" .25 wall DOM and 3/4" heims so the ID was to big. Also it's cheaper and easier to get the weld in bungs than buying and using a tap that size. I would have needed both right and left hand and they cost more than several sets of bungs.
