Default Header Install

I am going to start my project next week. This will be the biggest job I've done on my XJ. If I could get some tips and tricks that would be awesome.
Also, whats the deal with header wrap? Is it something I should consider? I like the idea of cooler intake charges but is it detrimental to the header? TIA

what header are you installing? that will help guys give you more specific pointers.

header wrap is good for race cars and hot rods that dont see mud and dirt and water, but when doing my header i was told to stay away from the wrap as it will hold the water and dirt and speed up rust which made sense, if you want to keep heat down get a ceramic coat put on it.

Soak the bolts and pay attention to how the spacer/washers sit on the manifolds. Swivel sockets help. Remove air box so you have room to get to the bottom bolts.

Yeah, I'm gonna take the washer fluid jug out too.

Do I need to get the bolts out while they're still hot?

No, they are looser when they are cold. I found you need a ratcheting wrench to reinstall the APN header, the middle lower bolts are a PITA. I layed underneath the jeep to get all the lower bolts

If it's the APN header going onto a 91-99 HO 4.0, I have a write up in the how to section.

hey whats up, I just put a header not to long ago. its a pretty straight forward process, and about the header wrap.I would definately consider. I put header wrap on my headers and my under hood temps are WAAAY down. low enough i can work in the engine bay after i'v ran it hard. just my .02C

I can't imagine why . I'll be removing the air box AND the wiper fluid jug to get at everything so hopefully that will help.

APN header for the HO engines on a Renix 4.0.....

Good question. I'm not sure if the exhaust ports and what not match up correctly. IIRC, and I may be wrong, but I coulda sworn I saw something somewhere that the exhaust ports are either slightly different in size or location.

But, hell, wing it! Tear her down, and see if it bolts up lol.

The intake ports are a little higher but the exhaust is the same.
I hope

the only differences i noticed between the two are the egr system and that funky heat riser into the airbox flap.... i know that removing emissions stuff is frowned upon but both egr and heat riser can be nixed (hehe) and not cause drivability issues i have caused renixes to run better after the fact... the heads are the same as far as this intall is concerned
