Default has anyone turboed the 4.0l?

just curious on builds if any on turboing a 4.0l 98 jeep Cherokee. have no real knowledge on turbos , so was wondering if its worth it at all , and if the benefits are good for off-roading (not rocks). not that I am lacking power or getting stuck with a 9 inch lift and 35s , but who wouldn't want that extra lil bit of power to go with the lift? any information and experience is welcomed , and if I could get Cherokeeforum to upload pictures id link a photo , but right now I am having issues with pictures

I hate to say it but the price of piecing together a turbo set up you can do a v8 swap on it.Or build up a 4.6 stroker with a nice cam.

The more you look, the more you'll see this is a very unfeasible mod. Our 4.0's get pretty hot already so adding a turbo to it can make excessive heat. Turbos like hi RPMs to function well, you need to do a lot of work or get a smaller turbo to help produce an earlier spool. Then theres cost. its not just a 700 dollar turbo and some fittings.. Consider a supercharger instead. Less everything but power!

I have a 3 core copper/brass radiator , ive never had issues ever since I put it in , I also have electrical fans on switch 12 inch 14 blade im pretty sure.
the supercharger was also an option im just looking for some information from someone who has done it previously . is it possible to do supercharger and turbo?


when I go up north its about 700kms drive . and up and down rds , than once I get to the bush its a 40 km dirt corduroyed rd. so what im looking for is that extra power for towing the boat up hills , when shes at 3-4k rpm. some turbos ive seen so far kick in around 3krpm , and that's what im looking for . if I floor it at the lights I hit about 4.5krpm , and on highways at 80-90kms( not taking the extra kms for tire size into consideration maybe a bit faster) . but also looking for pick up to pass people when going those speeds

Not saying it can't be done, just expensive to do it right. Check out the threads on here, jeep forum and NAXJA. You can do a combo super/turbo charged set up.. Im pretty sure that would help eliminate lag, but seems like now were jumping up in price again. What about an LS2 swap? Price would be about the same in the end and you could still add some forced induction for even more power.

as far as swapping goes , id rather keep the straight six and beef it up over put a new engine in , it is a possibility but im looking to keep my options open before it comes to that . id be doing all the work myself so that's not the issue , and I technically have a mechanic(who I grew up with) for everything . doing the turbo right would be the issue , my one buddy has a 10second vw 2.0l with a 67mm turbo . so id assume he can help me with the proper set up . I was mainly just curious if anyone has done it and what kind of feedback on types of turbos , and set ups if any . how much power has been added and what are the pros and cons . although an ls2 or a 350/351 would be awesome to use , id like that to be a last resort. as far as money goes im not in a huge rush so I can just save and get what is desired

If you want power back after the lift and tires, regear your axles. You'd blow the transmission out sooner or later anyway.

I would say stroke it first to be completely honest. Running a supercharger or a turbo on a 13+ year old engine is just asking for it. Especially with old worn cast pistons. Then if you want even more power than that supercharge it.

a stroker is a lot of work tho is it not , and are there any good recommended names I could look for . so it seems turbo should be last option in this case , 1st stroker -2nd supercharger - 3rd turbo ? if I decided to go that far?

Strokers are as easy or as hard as you want to make them. Try doing a search in Google for Jeep 4.0 stroker.

A stroker really isn't that tough of a build. I didn't do mine myself I paid to have it put together and it only took a couple weeks from the day i dropped it off at the shop to the day he brought it back ready to drop in. The reason I did a stroker instead of a 350 swap is because I had none of the equipment needed to put a V8 in my Jeep. It just seemed like the easier option since it just drops back in and plugs up. It would also give you quite a bit more torque than stock that will definitely help with towing. And if that is really not enough for you then yes I believe a supercharger would be easier to put together and install than a turbo. Silverxj on jeepstrokers.com is modifying an M90 supercharger to fit on his stroker and that's the route i'm planning on going in the future. And the supercharger would definitely last longer in a stroker than in an engine that already has a couple hundred thousand miles on it. As far as what brand strokers are the best I would probably say that Hesco, ATK, and Golen are the top 3 in that order. Otherwise you could drop your engine off at a shop like I did and hand pick what parts go in your engine so you can make sure they are quality. And I believe quality of parts goes a long way to ensuring the longevity/reliability of your stroker. Either way your looking at a couple grand into a build which is about the same cash you'll drop on a supercharger or turbo. But either way good luck in your build man.
