Default grand cherokee coil rear to cherokee

Is it possible to swap a coil rear suspension of a grand cherokee to a 96 cherokee 4 door sport?and if so, is there a difference in springs from front to rear?

Direct bolt in, no. You'll have to do some fabrication for the rear, but the rear axles aren't that great. You can get a Dana 35 or a Dana 44A. The 35 obviously sucks, but the 44A isn't that great either because it's made of aluminum.

Iirc there's an inch difference between the front and rear coils, 2" on v8 ZJs. Don't quote me on that though.

If you have the necessary skill to swap over a ZJ rear then don't bother. Make your own kit for an 8.8, D44, ect and convert to rear coils with a better axle.

possible? yes.

worth it? no.

all the work that would be required to do it, you might as well just build a custom 4 link setup.

okay yes so from searching the alum 44 is the center not the tubes so you could weld on a truss but the only way to do it right would be to swap the centers, can be done but sooooo not worth it, i say scrap it and find an 8.8, better than a 44 IMHO but i'm sure there's debate on that lol

You can TIG weld on aluminum, but the 44a is a weak axle and not worth messing with. It's comparable to a 35.

This threads had me thinking at work today about swapping over an XJ front end on my 8.25 and just welding tabs on for the control arms and a crossmember to bolt on to the frame for the arms and another one for the springs/shocks. Nothing crazy for now, I'd probably just get another rear axle, front UCAs and LCAs, and GC springs from the JY for ~$100, plus another $75 or so for steel.

My only dilemma on doing it is I have no idea how much height I'd be looking at gaining or losing or how to calculate it.

Seriously thinking about doing it. Not as a long term solution for rear coils, but for the cost it seems smart to screw with something I can bolt on or remove quickly/cheaply before I jump into a rear long arm setup with it. I just can't see paying $1500+ for what you get on the conversion kits.

Except don't make your rear links out of 1.5" tube. Then I'd have to give you hell until you make it bigger.

Would be cool if it wasn't a pain in the *** and didn't cost so much. I saw a kit that costed 3k for the swap.

That's silly. I have the conversion priced right around 600 bucks for parts.

That's the only reason I haven't bought new leaf springs. I can link the rear for just a little more than it'd cost to buy new springs.

I found it ridiculous too.

I can't see paying more than $1000 or so retail on them. I understand the labor and profit margin, but it's not like they're that labor intensive to make and the only really expensive material is the DOM tubing and even then you're not using much.

Forgot to add they included lift parts for front, but still seems a bit extreme.

Yeah I can't see paying more than half that, maybe, and that's a huge maybe, $2000. Then again I can make 90% of that myself, so I might feel different if I couldn't.

Don't shoot the messenger lol. I can piece together a kit half the price, and maybe little bit less.
