I finally got me a jeep, traded a old dirt bike for some rims then traded the rims for my new-to-me jeep, did i mention i got the dirtbike for free
So the only problem with the jeep aside from a cracked windshield and cracked cylinder head its only 2wd..so id like to convert it to 4x4.
Id like to swap in a dana44/9 inch ford combo if my research serves me right i can find them in a 4x4 1977-1979 f150. along with the axles im hoping to find a stock np231 tcase.
Do i need to swap to a 4x4 transmission or is this false info?
What else will i need in order to complete this swap?
What kind of fab work should i expect?

Yes you will need a 4x4 transmition. Your not looking into to much fab work, just prepair to have this "free" project nickel and dime you to DEAH....

you didn't mention year, engine, or trans....
AW4 auto behind a 4.0L might work but you need the tailshaft/adaptor to mount the transfer case. There were different AW4s over the years, so not necessarily just plug-n-play.
You would find it much easier to just put a locker in the rear diff. XJs get around pretty well even in 2wd with an open diff.

oops its a 94 4 door with the 4.0l and 5spd, not sure how to check what trans i have as far as i.d. codes. how can i check this?
also how can i tell if my rear axle is a dana 35 or chrysler 8.25?
reason i ask is because i found a sweet deal on a complete dana 30 for 50 bucks! that would satisfy my urge to hit the trails until i go bigger. plus i could start with 33s and progress with experience aka go to 35s with bigger axles.
one important question i forgot to ask, is the ford combo with 35s good for daily driving and long hauls? i know for what im trying to do id probly be better off sticking to turd 30s and 35s with some 33s but why not go prepared
